Has anybody here hunted colorado or maybe northern New Mexico,For elk and or mule deer,If so which would be the better place to go for the first time. What season would be best out of the 4 season's.I think maybe the last season,What would be the minimum calibur of rifle, can you take a 4-wheeler,Can you buy license across the counter,Thank's for any real information
Oh yea i understood that if you where a certain age you didn't have to show proof of a hunters education class,But i heard now all hunters have to have it,Is that so.
Thank's again

Colorado has more elk than any other state, but hunter pressure is also greater.

Success rates are not that great, about 30% and that is on the high end.

On some lands in Colorado 4 wheelers are permitted, some places they are not.

You will need to check with the website Txbowhunter1 listed for Colorado to get some of the info you are after.

Some seasons offer over the counter sales of Bull tags, some don't.

As for what season to go, it is much more dependent upon the weather than hunting deer in Texas.

Hunting pressure on the area you go to will also play a role on how many elk may be in an area.

Unless you were born before Jan. 1949, Colorado requires all hunters to show proof ot taking and successfully completeing a Hunters Ed course.

As for which season, it varies year to year which is best, but I'm told generally that the 4th season is often the toughest because the rut is certain to be over, the weather is more likely to be bad, and the animals have been pressured in the previous seasons. I think sometimes the first rifle season catches part of the rut.

Two years ago, I got a 6 x 6 bull on my first ever elk hunting trip in CO, I think it was the second rifle season. I had a guide and private land to hunt, although I actually got mine on public land. Not only was that the best hunting trip I've ever had, it was the best vacation I've ever had.
I shot a 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet, and I understand that 30-06 or 7mm are the most commonly used calibers out there. I have the impression that elk hunting often requires shots of well over 300 yds, fyi. www.muleymadness.com has an elk hunting forum, that seems generally pretty helpful. lots of guys from CO there.

Something else to think about also, should you go that is. A year or so i was sent to Denver to a Fire Alarm School. I had lived in Texas my whole life and had never ventured anywhere near those altitudes. By the second day in Denver i was sick as a dang dog. I would suggest you arive three days in advance and let your body adjust, and drink tons of water. Trust me, it was like a three day hangover, headache, spinning, nausia, the whole thing. Skinner

Go as early as you can, elk rut early. Most of the general seasons are after the rut. New Mexico private land hunts are in October while the elk are still rutting, at least they used to be.

The minimum in Colorado is the 243.

While I do know a guy that shot a bull a few years back with a 243, I would not recommend it.

What caliber of rifle do you have at present?

You may have a good rifle on your hands, just may need to change the ammo you are used to.
