Does anyone here use a short bed pickup to hall a canoe? How well would a 15-16' canoe work in the back? Do you put it up over the cab?
'preciate any tips Nate

Many years ago,(early 70's) my buddy had a short wheel base pickup and about a 14 ft canoe. We carried the canoe on the pickup but I cannot remember exactly how we did it.
I think we just tied it to the front bumper and let it ride over the back tailgate and tied it to the rear bumper.
We never had any problems, but never carried it more than 10-12 miles.
Wish my memory was better.

I carry mine over the cab. I have a 4 door and it rides perfect. I have never taken it more than 6 miles this way.

From the Texas Transportation Code
§ 621.206. MAXIMUM EXTENDED LENGTH OF LOAD. (a) A vehicle or combination of vehicles may not carry a load that extends more than three feet beyond its front or, except as permitted by other law, more than four feet beyond its rear. (b) Subsection (a) does not apply to vehicles collecting garbage, rubbish, refuse, or recyclable materials which are equipped with front-end loading attachments and containers provided that the vehicle is actively engaged in the collection of garbage, rubbish, refuse, or recyclable materials.
I used to work at a lumber yard, and we had a trooper that would watch vehicles leave and pull them over. He would make them unload there lumber if it was over length and go find a trailer to haul it.

do you haul this canoe quite a lot, if so it might be worth investing in weatherguard weekender half rack,or spend a little more and get a headache rack, with a removeable rear rack and put a front reciever hitch and have a welding shop build you what i used to call a field goal, with this type of set up you would hardly have any of the canoe extending off either end of the truck and wouldn't need a trailer.

I just put one end of the canoe in one of the corners of the bed. Then tie it with rope and/or bungees. Put something heavy in the front and just let the back hang out. It's redneck, but I only take mine about 5 miles on backroads to the river.

Thanks for the suggestions and the quote from the laws -- I don't have a canoe yet, but was thinking about a canoe or kayak or something for duck hunting. I'd have to haul it a pretty good distances and on highways, so it would be tough to go without an 'official' rig and avoid trouble with the law... Might have to consider a kayak more than a canoe.

They have some pad/bumper things you buy at Academy that connect to the canoe sidewalls. Turn the Canoe over, put the pad/bumbers on so it rest on you roof. Tie the front and back of the Canoe to the vehicle's front and rear bumper.
