Our 5 mo old Lab has duodectic mange, the vet has dipped her twice but it is only looking worse. Has anyone here had any experience with this. Should I change vets? Very frustrated.

THanks the one that uses ivomec seems to be the best chance of doing something different.

my experience is that it could take some time for the pup to get over it, month or two maybe.

If the vet had treated it, give it time to work even tho it may not look like its working.

The dips with Mitaban are the ONLY FDA-approved method of treating demodectic mange in dogs. It reqires 4-6 dippings every two weeks. The condition may get worse before it resolves. So, you're just getting started; don't despair. Your dog will likely be cured using this treatment.
Having said that, some cases don't clear up with Mitaban. In our practice, we'll then try ivermectin. This alternate treatment uses a cattle wormer that shows great promise and efficacy in dogs. BUT, it is NOT currently approved for use in dogs as a treatment for demodectic mange.
Your vet is following protocol in treating your dog. Stay the course.

Thanks but they are only dipping once every two weeks? Should I ask for more?

Once every two weeks is correct--for four to six sessions. Sorry I was vague in my previous post.

You should also go ahead and put a preventic collar on the dog. The active ingredient on the Preventic collar is Amitraz, just like the Mitaban has in it. It is best to keep one of those on the dog all of them time while dipping with the mitaban every to weeks.

Not sure this is approved, or even legal but here goes.
My dog in grade school came down with mange and my dad covered it with burn motor oil. I mean head to tow for an hour or so. Did it twice if I remember. All gone.
Oh yea, shave the dog 1st.
I hear it works the same for crabs.

Please don't put your used motor oil on your dogs...the mitaban and/or ivermectin will usually work in time. The hair loss will get worse before it gets better. The main issue is with the pup's immune system. The medications will help kill the mites until the dog's immune system is strong enough to keep the mites under control. Even after the mites are under control, there will be a possibility of another outbreak after a high stress situation. Other than the posibility of a secondary skin infection and the hair loss, demodex is not a major health issue. The preventic collar will help and would be a good idea to keep on the dog all of the time. If you plan to hunt the lab, the collar will help keep repel ticks which carry several diseases that are much worse than demodex.

I guess this shows my age but burnt lub oil was the only thing ever used for Mange back in the 60's and 70's. My Dads' college room mate at Aggie Land was Head of the Small Animals Vet Program still recomended this until he died in about 1998. Something don't just quit working!

Would this be Dr. Robert Playter? Or who? Crankcase oil to treat mange is QUACKERY in the first degree. Please educate us more...

Kerosene, vinegar, and egg whites. The egg whites keep the kerosene from burning the dog's skin. Quack, quack, quack. I just know it works.

This is not a joke. Mix up powdered sulfur and bacon grease into a paste until it makes a thick goo. Rub it all over the dog's hot spots or whole body. The dog will lick a lot of it off and that is a good thing for the sulfur that they ingest will deter any critters that are causing the problem. You are actually treating the problem from the inside and out. If the dog gets too much of the sulfur and bacon grease, it will upset their stomach for a day or so. Two to three days later, treat the dog again. Last weekend,I treated my wife's four month old dash hound for hot spots. She overdosed on the stuff and made her puke and poop for a day and a half but appears to have really helped with the hot spots. It seems any white or pink skinned dogs are proned to more problems that seem to be aggrevated by a dog that is somewhat hyper, ie pointer or walker hound.

we had a pup get it a couple of years ago. we tried dipping the dog twice with no success. my best friend is my vet and he told me to get some injectable ivomec equine dewormer. i administered it orally thru a syringe. it works great. you just give it in a much smaller dose. if you want i will ask him what dosage. just let me know age and weight.
