Raven Semi Auto
      #450136 - 06/29/08 04:24 PM

A certain person just bought a Raven 380. He states he is going to use it as his CH. Now, with that said, and knowing this person, why???? Why would he place himself and possibly his 8 month old son and wonderful wife, in harms way??? He is also purchasing a Glock 9mm. Would that not be a much better choice. The 9mm isn't potent round, IMO, but better then the Raven and the 380. I am asking that we all pitch in 5 dollars and step him up the a Jennings 9mm, Thanks.

BTW, 15 bucks should cover the Jennings

Glock is a million times the gun. Also Glocks are rated for +P+ ammo, +P in a good hollow point is more potent and expands to over .40 w/ a good bullet. In my opinion 9mm is plenty of bullet and 380 too in the hands of a trained shooter. But i would rather have mase than a Raven.

Anybody who believes that with modern defensive ammunition, the 9mm is not a potent round, has been reading way too many gun magazines.

You can't even hit the ground with a Raven. Throwing it or shooting it.

In Raven's defense i had a pocket 25 of theres...It was a fun gun to shoot. It cycled well but i had to replace the firing twice because it broke in half

I think Edgar Allen Poe once owned a Raven, sold it and said...

I never owned or fired one but I know they didn't have the greatest reputation.

Thought that was the Alan Parsons Project
Quote:

The Alan Parsons Project

The Raven
Written by Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons

The clock struck midnight

And through my sleeping

I heard a tapping at my door

I looked but nothing lay in the darkness

And so I turned inside once more

To my amazement

There stood a raven

Whose shadow hung above my door

Then through the silence

It spoke the one word

That I shall hear for evermore

Nevermore

Thus quote the raven, nevermore

And still the raven remains in my room

No matter how much I implore

No words can soothe him

No prayer remove him

And I must hear for evermore

Quoth the raven, nevermore

Thus quoth the raven

Nevermore

When I was 15 I worked for Thrifty Rent A Car. It was my job to vacuum out the rental cars when they got returned. One day I was vacuuming and saw something shiny under the seat. It was a polished chrome Raven .25 auto! I was so thrilled to have found the gun. I held onto it thinking that the customer was going to call for it-but they never did!

I only shot it a few times because it was hard to get bullets for it. I was not old enough to buy them so I had to beg my older brother to buy them for me.

One day my buddy & I were fishing off a bridge over a tidal creek. The tide was going out and at some point a small 3 foot alligator started hanging out under us. As he was swimming against the tide he was basically stationary under us. I ran to my car, grabbed my Raven and came back to the bridge. I had to time it when no cars were coming to take the shot. Anyway, one shot-approximately 25 yards and I plowed him right through the brain case! When the bullet hit him he started flipping violently on the surface.. Then he just stopped moving and slowly began to sink. We could see the tide moving him under the water away from us until finally we could not see him anymore. My friend was amazed that I hit him. I was amazed that it killed the gator! Can't quite recall what happened to that gun. Child hood memories.

JA-25 and JA-9 [Re: 7mag]
      #460444 - 07/14/08 01:54 PM

I've been around the Ravens since the 70's and more recently the updated Jimenez Arms JA-25 and JA-Nine. I'm not stupid, they don't compare over the long run with my top line S-Autos but they remain a good choice and it would be a fatal mistake to assume that you could beat an encounter with either of these with a rock.

My little JA-25 gets a lot of use. It took me about 30 minutes to slick this little fellow up and have a shooter despite it's fixed sights and reputation.

I cast a 50-grain bullet for the pistol out of plumbers lead and my ammo does great from this pistol. Here is the only picture I have from my load development. It was shot with the fixed sights resting on the 4" center of target at 25-yards. All six bullets entered the target at the same point of impact. The pin-holes in the target are from debris blow-back as the target paper was not backed with cardboard.

Like I said, I cast and reload for the 25 ACP and I think that it makes a huge difference in the accuracy and performance of this cartridge. Both of my pistols have the "Combat" finish rather that the "East LA Pimp-out". Both my dad and I have killed a number of critters with the 25 ACP, my latest was a coyote from the cab of my tractor. The stupid critter was just sitting there looking at the tractor and the 25 caliber plumbers lead bullet knocked about a 40 caliber hole through him.

It would be asinine to compare these pistols to premium pistols but it would also be asinine to face an opponent that has one thinking it is no more lethal than a rock. My dad carried a Raven 25 ACP over a tough career as a PI. I had a hooker try to rob me as I got in my Jeep one night. I beat her to the draw and she did not doubt how lethal that JA-25 was as it touched her temple.

To me, worth is measured by the shooter and what he measures out with the pistol. A bunch of money is spent on pistols that will never peform to their worth. Any pistol is just components, a shooter is what makes it. I just wouldn't discount these firearms in capable hands.

I'm not a fan of Ravens or the 380 caliber. However you can bet your bottom dollar that I'd be alot more afraid of a competent shooter holding a Raven 380 than I would be of a "Street Daddy Gang Banger holding a S&W 40. Then again, the thought of facing off with either isn't very pleasant. Just think I could out draw the Gang Banger and put one of mine in his boiler room faster. However, I ain't fast, and a good shooter with the Raven 380 would most likely put his little 90gr. slug into my boiler room before I clear leather with my 45ACP.
Regards, & Good Shootin',

The linage of Raven, Jennings, BryCO, and Jimenez line of pistols probably has outsold most other pistol manufacturers combined. These are the Saturday-Night Specials. These are the pistols that have fueled a lot of the anti-gun efforts across this country. That has had a lot to do with my interest in them, especially in how I feel about a firearm. I wanted to see, first-hand, how they compared to sidearms with a more prestigious pedigree. My experience is that they do compete. I wrote about the JA-25 but my JA-Nine is the same. No more slicking up then say one of my Colts and very accurate with factory ammo.

My support of them is deeper than what I wrote in my preceding post. The anti-gun lobby would like to eliminate this type of pistol and a lot of gun-owners walk along with it because it doesn't effect their pistol with a pedigree. I say BS, as gun control is then an issue of how much an arm costs. This is simplifying a lot of issues but it keeps the post short.

There are a lot of these pistols on the mean streets of this country and thank God your typical hood, gang-banger, punk thinks that you have to twist your wrist to shoot!

You probably are getting tired of my comments, but... [Re: Ranch Dog]
      #461119 - 07/15/08 08:09 AM

Here is a very good set of web pages for tuning the JA-380 or any of the other Jimenez Arms pistols. Actually, walking through the pages will tune any Semi-Auto.

Taming the Jimenez JA-380

I see I didn't say it above, my dad's primary pistol during his PI years was a .380 and he never feeled under-gunned. He specialized in small debit collection and by the time I was 16, I knew how to handle a "door". These were different times than now.
