Sad to say - might want to read
      #452833 - 07/02/08 08:00 PM

My 14 year old daughter wants to bow hunt. So i took her to smithfield archery today in fort worth to find a bow. I had never been there before always using cabelas so i thought i would give them a try. after about 10 minutes of just standing there waiting for someone to help me a man finally walks up and asked what we needed. i told him my daughter wanted to start bow hunting and i wanted to see what they had. the first sentence to me was well let me point you to the cheaper stores because we are a pro shop and you will need to spend alot of money. Well he did not have to point and i let him know that. the old man lost a sale in fact he lost two because i was hoping to pick up a new bow also. i drove to cabelas and should have in the first place. i am sure there are people on this forum that love smithfield and this will piss them off, but sad to say smithfield won't get a second chance to earn my money.

Hey, Wes70 has a bow shop in NRH. Look him up, if you haven't already made a purchase.

Sorry to hear about that deal. I, too, went there ONCE!!!

There are good and bad archery shops. I have found throughout the years that most pro shops cater to a certain kind of buyer and if you are not one of them, you don't get the service that others do, and I found that most of the catalog shops ie Bass Pro, and Cabelas didn't have the quality of equipment I was looking for, so I learned how to work on them myself, with the help odf a few trusted folks that were willing to teach me and now all I do is buy the bow and do everything else myself. Wes 70 on here has been kind enough to help me out on problems that I have had that I couldn't figure out and with his help and another good friend, I haven't had to deal with any of the mess. I've got to say Wes makes extra effort to make sure everyone has a positive experience when they are in his shop.

I would suggest going to Arlington Bow Hunting World. That is where I bought my daughter a bow last year. She was 13 at the time. Ken has been working on bows for 30+ years and knows his stuff. It is a one man shop and so I would suggest calling before going over there. 817-478-5990.

Good Luck.

I really thought about posting and almost didn't but i had my family with me. I was standing there with my arm around my daughter when the man made the statement and at 14 she was upset with his remark. we had been talking about going to smithfield for about 2 weeks and she was excited. my wife had already decided she wanted to go somewhere else after standing there waiting for someone to help us out. your right ducttape i am sure they did not expect me to post and i am usually the type of person that is quick to give a compliment instead of a complaint but i really felt like i should say something. if my kids had not been with me i would have probably told the man what i thought right then. i guess it is time to put it behind me and get my kids ready for deer season. my plans are to video her sticking a deer or a hog. my kids have been climbing in a stand with me as soon as they could walk. there is nothing like taking your kid hunting. no youtube, no ipod, no cell phone etc just good ole communication.

So you call a business that may or may not be busy at the time and ask a stupid question and then wonder why you get that kind of response?

Ken is very plain spoken but I have never seen him start a conversation in a rude manner. I have seen a few people who expected him to be rude, that started a conversation in a rude manner and got the same thing back. It is one of those self fulfilling prophecies... if you go into a situation expecting to be offend you often will be. If you go into it with a friendly attitude you might be surprised. Might want to give it a try.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I have nothing but good to say about Smithfield. Rhonda and crew have always been very nice and helpful. I hope people don't hold that against her and give Smithfield another chance.

That ain't far from the truth with Ken.Thats why the only money of mine he gets is to shoot his video range.I'll never forget the first time I steped into his shop with a newby question and got a less than friendly answer.

let me tell you about Ken. The first time i stepped into his shop i thought he was a pecker head. I felt bad about thinking that about some one i didnt even know. So the very next day i went in and we talked for a while even had lunch with him. He is just plain spoken. He knows what he is talking about. He is just old and grumpy.

Grumpy has cost him the sale of at least three new bows that I know of and being my bow tech of choice.

I've been in Smithfield some for the last 2 days. Purchased a Matthews for myself with all the works the first day. I can tell you that the experience there was a pleasure. I would recommend them highly. They dont carry low end bows for kids or women. The next day I bought a bow for my daughter at Bass Pro and took it to Smithfield and Stan tweaked it for my daughter.
Stan and Rhonda run a very good business where the customer feels very satisifed with the personal service.

I'd have to strongly disagree with the original poster. I just stareted shooting about a month ago with a bow I bought at a garage sale. Stan checked it out for me, even the limbs out, and even put a new cable guard on it. When I bought some arrows, he gave me a bunch of pointers on how to shoot. Whenever I ask him about something, like a new stabilizer or even a new bow, if its cheaper somehwere else Rhonda will tell me so. Never got upsold, or bait and switched or anything. Maybe he shouldn't have pointed a finger, but maybe you shouldn't have asked what bows they have for kids when all the bows are on display right next to the counter.

Rab,

What I suggest you do is make a call or write a lettter to the bow manufacturers that this store sells. This worked on a store in Houston where incidents like this happened so often and so many people did it, they got some of the big brand bow manufacturers to pull their stuff from that particular dealer and over about a year, it put them out of business. A shop that treats people that way doesn't need to be around.

Rab,
I actually think the Pro Shop was being honest with you. These small shops have tight margins and can not carry the volume of bows for the price that a beginner may be willing to spend. His delivery may not have been good but he was just letting you know that his busness is with guys/gals buying and shooting high end bows set up for release shooters.
I had something of a similar experience with various shops. I shoot fingers with a 31 inch draw and prefer 70-80 lbs of draw. I would like to try 3 different bows I am interested in so that I may select one in upgrading my bow. I was not able to find a bow designed for a finger shooter on the rack of any bow shop in the DFW area. Everyone is more then willing to order what I want but it is a special order, so in effect I buy a bow without ever shooting it. I am not interested in buying without trying it first. I could not even get Bass Pro to bring one of the bows in for me to try. My goal now is to just keep asking around and hopefully I can find some folks with the bows I am interested in trying. For now, I stick with my 17 year old Hoyt Fast Flight bow.

BS.....you own a business and want people to feel like you want them there......No if ands or butts.......

That plain jane.....that's just the way he is BS ain't flying with me.....

if I walk into a shop and ask about buying a new bow.....and they give me the cold shoulder.....
everyone that i can think of is going to hear about it...

The first time I bought a bow....i went to that little shop in Lewisville.....those guys were nice....helped me out, and even when the shop closed.....shared a cold beer with me......and I didn't buy the bow from them.....and they didn't try to sell me stuff I didn't need...that is the kind of service you want.....and that is the kinda service POOPY will give you......

Acting that way with a family......BULLLLLLSHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT

So very true! WITH THAT SAID, Ken really knows his stuff.

Wes70 is a stand-up man of integrity. I have never spent a nickel with him but he has always been quick to help me with information.

I used to work for an advertising agency. We told our customers that word of mouth is the best way to advertise. Our business was to put people through the front door so that they could treat them right and get the word of mouth going. I appreciate your posting your experience here. I am one guy who will stay away.
