I grew up in Northwest Oklahoma and have hunted there my entire life. It is a sleeper state and has a lot of really big deer. Lots of great opportunities, even on public land.

I've been thinking about looking into it. Something to do on public land that isn't shotgun-only. Anybody hunted public lands up there?
Grizz, if you want some company on a scouting run sometime, let me know. I'd love to just walk the dirt and help you find what's what up there.

I missed a 150 class 8 just north east of Stillwater last year with a smoke pole and I watched my cousin miss a mulie that was over 180 B/C with his bow in the panhandle.
Their are some great deer up there but out of state licenses can get expensive and they only have a two week Rifle season, week long Muzzleloader season and the rest is bow. Thier public hunting areas can have some great results if you put the time in.

Up until a few years ago, my family and I spent alot of time riding ATV's just north of Broken Bow. It was all public land, and some of it was Ouachita National Forest and most of it was the Three Rivers WMA owned by Weyerhaeuser. The WMA land required a $25 annual usage permit, and the National Forest land was free. I had friends that hunted up there, and as I recall, their gun season only lasted a week or two. They had a long bow season, but a short gun season. It's seems pretty expensive to purchase an out of state license to hunt up there if your only interested in gun hunting with such a short season.

I just discoverd that there is thousands of acres of public land about 2 hours from me. Mountains and rushing rivers, rocks, etc. Wright City area in SE OK. I heard there is great turkey hunting. Old school easter kinda hunting.
I heard that they only allow 4 wheelers for hunting now:(
Last year you could pretty much ride the public areas at will. The camping was great and cheap. Like what was said before 25 per year per person.
I have a big map of the paper company land and WMS etc.
If ya ever been to Camp Dierks with the Boy Scouts, It's in that area.
I think out of state deer tags and liscens is to expensive for me but I will probably give Turkey a try in the spring.

I have never hunted the land around us but all=ways intended to.It was 216.00 for out of state the lst i checked and then you had to have the 26.00 permit to drive on there property in 3 rivers.I have been there 7 years and have seen some biguns on the road but a TEXAS boy in OKLAHOMO while they all have a firearm just sorta scared me

I lived in Tulsa awhile. I still hunt the public land there every year. There is way better hunting on public land, and leases are like 1/3 the price here. IMO OK is a better place to live if you like to hunt.

I would agree if your a bow hunter. For those hunting with rifles, Texas offers a much longer season. These are the dates for the 2008-2009 Oklahoma deer season copied from the Oklahoma Wildlife Dept. website.
DEER SEASONS: The archery deer season runs from Oct 1 through Jan 15. The muzzleloading season opens on the fourth Saturday in October and runs for nine days. The deer gun season opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs for 16 days.
ARCHERY: Oct. 1 - 2008-Jan. 15, 2009 MUZZLELOADING: Oct. 25 - Nov. 2, 2008 (Antlerless days vary by zone) GUN: Nov. 22 - Dec. 7, 2008 (Antlerless days vary by zone) YOUTH DEER GUN: Oct. 17-19, 2008; statewide HOLIDAY DEER GUN SEASON: Dec. 19-21, 2008 & Dec. 26-28, 2008 (Open only in certain zones).

Leases have started rising very quickly. My opinion is that Okla. is the next Kanasas/ohio.

How long ago?
I had acess to some prime bottom land out side of Pawnee last year, it got leased this year for $16000 for 400 acres. We own the 400 next to it and they offered us the same deal and we said no.
I've been getting calls on my land in the panahadle from outfitters wanting access and they have been offering $4-10 acre depending on which part, and location. They all got a no.

I just joined a lease (or hunting club). 37,000 acres for $600.00 for annual access. You can hunt anything allowed by the state of oklahoma.

Everyone says that it is expensive to hunt in OK, but if you bow hunt, it's a great deal.
Here is the archery license info:
2008 NR Combined Deer Archery (Antlered/Antlerless) 7/28/2008 to 12/31/2008 For nonresidents who hunt deer during archery season to harvest one antlered and one antlerless deer. If hunting only deer, no annual or 5-day hunting license is required. Legacy permit is also required, unless exempt. - $251.00
Archery season runs from Oct. 1 thru Jan 15.

I don't see how compared to Texas anyone could call it expensive ? I own a cabin there and I am thinking about hunting the area this year as well.I noticed someone posted the price for bow season from can till cain't but the funny thing is in the middle of the season (January 1st) you have to buy a new liscense from what i hear they are good from when ever until December 31. I was up this weekend checking on the cabin and saw some really good looking park deer at bevers bend.Cogburn you are not kin to Richard or Rodger Cogburn that went to Rockwall back in the late 70's are you
