Why not put a restriction in place like some states do that a buck has to have a minimum of 6 inches of antler on one side to be legal?
Or how about putting a 3 points on one side limit.
These regs protect the bucks with even worse genetics to get older and breed, the spikes and forkhorns, the 13" spread regulation is a much better system. These 4.5 and 5.5 year olds that don't meet the 13" are few and far between, the majority of hunters in alot of these counties proposed to be under the AR have never even seen a 4.5 much less a 5.5 year old buck because they all get killed before they reach that age. People say these area don't have the genetic to produce big deer, but the fact is they would be shocked to see how big their native deer CAN grow if they just get some age on them.

As I have mentioned before, if age structure of the buck segement of the herd is what is in question, why not simply after the end of the 2008-2009 season, close down buck hunting till the 2011-2012 season, state wide, that will guarantee an older buck segement of the herd.
Would anyone want to see that type of regulation?
I would welcome such a move, I will just a soon shoot a tasty doe as a tough old buck, but there would be a huge outcry from the majority against this, not to mention a nose dive in $$$ to the hunting economy in these counties. I think before you see such a move TPWD will shorten the general gun season.

I live and hunt in Tyler County and we have a 2 buck and 2 doe limit right now and it is one of those proposed AR counties. What if they lowered it to 1 buck, 2 does? Wouldn't that keep some of the hunters looking for that 1 good buck for the season to use a tag and still have freezer meat with the does? Just asking a hypothetical question!!!

I have hunted in places with both the 3 point system and the 6 inches of hardened antler, and the folks that lived and hunted in those places liked them, and from what I saw they worked for the most part.
The statement I don't buy into, Quote:
People say these area don't have the genetic to produce big deer, but the fact is they would be shocked to see how big their native deer CAN grow if they just get some age on them.
simply because it does not matter how great the genetics in an area are, without the right amount of excess protein in their diet, those bucks will not reach their full genetic potential, and that is straight from the Deer Management seminar at the Kerr WMA.
No, no one is going to be for a complete closure on bucks for two years, but if TP&W enacted it, just like they did the AR's where hunters don't have a choice. people that were really deer hunters would see the benefit in increasing the age structure and go ahead and kill does those two seasons.
Only the Antler Chasers would have a problem. JMO.

For a lot of folks that might work.
Forcing hunters to shoot their limit of does opening weekend/opening 9 days of season, before being able to shoot a buck, would have the same effect for many folks.
From what I have seen in the past, before the days of the AR's, many hunters would bust the first doe they saw and then save a tag for the end of season, and in some cases go two or three seasons before firing a shot at a buck.
With a certain percentage of hunters, being able to kill A Deer opening weekend/week, takes the edge off and they settle down and wait for something big to come along.

Actually i think it would just be the opposite with the Antler Chasers. I think they would in brace the fact that there is going to be more balanced heard by closing buck season for a couple of years and only allowing does to be shot.
Well i guess its depends on your defintions of antler chasers-
Shot only mature big bucks- They will embrace it Shot a buck just b\c is a buck- They won't
I'm all for closure or Buck bonus tag system( Does first)

I suspect that closing buck season would A: rile a bunch of people up and B: help the overall statewide herd because most places I've seen have a buck to doe ratio that is way out of line with what all the theories say it should be. JMO
