Remi has Heartworms
      #447103 - 06/24/08 09:52 AM

Well fellas, I just got back from my vet, and Remi, my GSP tested positive for heartworms. Can anyone give me any guidance on what to do? What are his chances of surviving treatment?

I am up against a wall here trying to decide if I am to put him down now, or pay a lot of money for him to have a "chance" at surviving it.

This sucks...

I didn't know heartworms were that serious...I'm sorry.
What did the vet suggest?

The vet suggested treating him. He would have to stay at the hospital for 3 days, and then come home for confinement for 30 more days. Then, go back and get tested. At this point, we "hope" the treatment worked.

Call the SPCA or Humane Soceity. They offer low cost heartworm treatments. I've had two dogs go through the treatment and both survived with no problems. If it were my dog I would have the treatment done without even hesitating. Also, even if your dog is on heartworm preventative, get them checked yearly. They can still get heartworms while on the preventative.

The treatment has gotten better than it used to be but it is still pretty bad. Unless your dog is REALLY bad then it should have no problem surviving! If your dog was on preventative all the time and you have proof and have them tested every year some companies will pay for the treatment! JMO!

How old is he/she? that may have a big impact on the prognosis. most dogs recover extremely well with the modern treatments.

Remi just turned 5 yrs. He has not started losing weight or anything yet, so I think he is probably in stage 2.

I am dropping him off in the morning at the vets office to get him started on the treatment. If you are the type, please say a prayer for us. It is going to be really tough on him and me.

I've had a lab go through the process as well and make it out just fine. It wasn't cheap but it was worth it to me knowing that I did what I could do at the time.

Thanks for the support guys. Remi seems to be doing ok right now. We are 3 days into him being home, and it is tough tokeep a GSP in a kennel all day except to pee. This is going to be a long month.

As for the preventative, unfortunately I am completey at fault for this. I slacked off a while back for about 3 months, and I am sure that is when he picked it up. Makes me feel like comlete S&$t that he is goig through thisb/c of me.

My brother in law gave me the good advice of putting the schedule in my cell phone so I don't forget. It's the best thing I've done to remember it.

Trust me...I have learned my lesson. It is now in my Blackberry, on my office calendar, and on my home office computer's Outlook calendar. I will NEVER miss again.

I to have my reminder set up in my cell phone. I had two labs that had them at the same time and there was not a chose in the treatment, had to be done. Totally my fault . Never again, prevention cheaper than the cure.

Best of luck to Remi and I am sure everything will go as good as it can.

Also I had posted before about www.petshed.com You can get heartworm preventive without the prescription here and alot cheaper. I use it all the time.

GOOD LUCK AGAIN!
