Got my copy of the 2008-2009 Applications for Drawings on Public hunting Lands.
On a serious note, the picture on this years cover is of Justin Hurst, the Game Warden that was killed on March, 17, 2007, his 34th. birthday while, while apprehending a poacher in Wharton county.

Does anyone know if the poacher was caught/prosecuted? I would sure like to know. I see they renamed Peachpoint WMA in his honor.
I also just received the booklet that you are talking about. I am going to complete one permit for each category to see how my luck is running. If I can get at least 1 or 2 permits, that would be cool.

Don't mean to jack your thread, but does anyone know when they update their website for next deer hunting season? I need to schedule my vacation.

All you have to do, is look at a calendar and see the date of the First Saturday in November.
This year that is November 1.
It will close the First Sunday in January 2009, which is the 4th. of Jan. 2009.
If you are including archery season, I may be wrong but it may start on Sept. 26th. this year, as the first Saturday in October is the 3rd.
I believe TP&W schedules Archery season to run 30 days, by starting it on the 3rd. it would only run for 28 days.
By opening it on the 26th. it would run for 36 days.

Thanks, I can schedule my vacation now. I am also interested in the youth hunt also. I want to be able to bring my kids.

It used to.
I could be wrong and it may do so again this year, but the first Sat. in Oct. is the 3rd.
This past season opening day of Archery season was Sept. 29, the last Sat. of Sept.

My guesstimate on the Youth deer seasons are Oct. 25 and 26, and Jan. 17 and 18.
Those are just a guess on my part, but I am basing those dates on this past seasons dates.

Ever since I started deer hunting in Texas, TP&W has been pretty predictable with planning seasons.
When I first started, deer season opened the Saturday closest to the 15th. of November.
Over the years it changed to the first Saturday in November, but in some years it actually opened on the last Saturday in Oct.
Sort of like Dove Season, from the time I killed my first dove in 1967, Dove Season has opened on Sept. 1 just as sure as the rising and setting of the sun.

Here's a little key to go by on deer season dates:
White-tailed Deer:
Archery-only Season: the Saturday closest to September 30 through the day prior of the General Season.
North Texas- General Season: first Saturday in November through the first Sunday in January. Special Late Antlerless Season: (certain counties) 14 consecutive days starting the first Monday following the first Sunday in January.
Panhandle- General Season: Saturday before Thanksgiving for 16 consecutive days.
South Texas- General Season: the first Saturday in November through the third Sunday in January. Special Late Antlerless Season: 14 consecutive days starting the first Monday following the third Sunday in January Muzzleloader-only Season: first Saturday following the closing of the general open season for nine consecutive days for 23 specific counties (check the county listings for these). Special Youth-Only (16 & under) Seasons: Early Season: the Saturday and Sunday immediately before the first Saturday in November. Late Season: the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in January.

Do you think that will change for 2009, since the first Satuday in November is the 7th. or do you think that it will change to the 31st. of Oct.?

Just called TPWD, and they told me archery starts Sept 27, general starts Nov 1, and the youth hunt is Oct 25-26, and Jan 17-18.
Crazyhorse you were dead on. Thanks.

Opening day of the General Deer Season will stay the first Saturday in November for the majority of the counties in Texas except for the few in the Panhandle. The only way it would change is through a proposal and then to public hearings to the Commission Hearing.

Oh well, you can't be right all the time. But I was actually referring to the youth hunts. I have to make sure I am not working for those. My kids would be mad. They like being able to say they killed a deer before I did.
