M4-Field report
      #450160 - 06/29/08 05:40 PM

took my new toy out for a hunt/rum ride last nite, all i can say is, WOW! how i lived without this gun for so long is a crime.

took on piglet (20 lbs) on the run at about 80 yards, two raccoons, and a larger 80 lb hog while shooting from a moving jeep holding the spot light in one hand and shooting with the other.

i have always been fairly good at taking running shots, but now the hogs have a lot less of a chance at escape.

for anyone who has been pondering getting an ar-style rifle for plinking/predator hunting, go for it

Gongrats glad you are happy with it.

Which rounds are you using, and how well did they take out those pigs? I am loading my own, for plinking and am loading the .55 gr fmj. They don't shoot very well, but are very cheap. I have a 1 in 7 twist barrel, so I really need to be shooting the 70 gr at least.

i was shooting remington/umc 55 grain fmj.

the piglet caught it in the side of the head and it was lights out. the sow took one in the hindquarter and another in the head, she flopped around and finally gave up the ghost. with the umc ammo, its pretty accurate. one coon i got in the face at 130 yds.

from now on, unless i'm deer hunting, all my pig hunts will take place with the m-4. just picked up some ballistic tips, so that should make for some explosive fun!

That is what I am loading, the Remington 55 grain fmj's. What twist rate is your barrel?

i think its 1 in 9, but i'm not 100% on that.

for a short carbine (16in barrel), the thing shoots amazing.

if you've got twist made for heavier bullets, i would try some 64 grainers

I plan on loading some heavier bullets, and sighting in with those. Not sure which ones yet though.

ardodson,

i got the bushmaster m-4 flattop carbine. i put a bushmaster trophy red/green dot sight on it.

after i mounted it, it was within 2 inches of aim point. no magnificatoin, but up to 100 yards, aiming is a breeze and running shots are no problem.

i think the scope was 110 bucks, its made for shotguns so you know it can take some abuse
