Cattle Panel Blind
      #448085 - 06/25/08 04:51 PM

This is a 4' X 7' permanent blind in a corner of one of our ponds. I was going to cut all the willows this spring until it dawned on me that's a favorite puddle duck landing area during season so why not stick a blind in there.

First I made a 4 X 7 floor frame out of treated 2x6s. Next we buried four 6" cedar posts 30" deep and quick-creted in place.

Then I moved the prefab'd frame in place and secured it to the posts once it was leveled and with a slight pitch forward to drain away rain and dawg water. Then filled the voids with top soil to discourage snakes and other critters from nesting under the floor. I even added a couple handsful of moth balls around the perimeter of the frame before filling with soil. Then I covered the secured frame with 5/8" thick exterior ply that had two coats of exteriior latex apllied in advance.

Next came the prefab'd back wall unit with a door and secured it to the back floor and rear posts. Then came the wrapping of the 52" X 16' cattle panel around the 4 posts on the two sides and front, securing it in place with post nails as I went.

Next was a prefab'd cattle panel cover that serves as roof and upper back wall. Last was leveling and fine raking the soil at the back of the blind and seeding it with a rye & clover mix. The recent rains and warm weather really promoted grass and willow growth. Just before season I'll be cutting willows from nearby areas and attaching them to the sides, back and top of the blind and we should be good to go.

Sweet.

Last time I said I was a little envious. I think you can just about bump that up to green.

Nice work. I need to buy me a little place some time soon.
