Moving exotics
      #447656 - 06/25/08 12:31 AM

Is it legal to tranqualize, sell and transport exotics?
We have so many axis and aoudad showing up we are just kicking around ways to get rid of them. I dont want to shoot an animal just so I can say I thinned the herd, but at the same time it's a beating shelling out 600 bucks a month for protien.
Also, is selling hunts a viable option?
How many people would really want to come out and pay a per day hunting fee or maybe even just a kill fee?
Would it be better to find a guide or outfitter and let them bring clients?
We are obviously not a professional operation, just some guys that bought some land and were blessed with exotics.
We are not trying to get rich, just kicking around ideas looking to recoop some feed expense.

Sell a hunt.....me first....
depending on the price.....but if your not looking to get rich.....you might sell a couple of hunts or so and make some money to help with feed....

Axis and aoudad are quite popular and lots of people pay a pretty penny to shoot them......

Depending on price.....I might be interested......

As for your other questions....about darting and selling, not sure.....

I go along with what Kent stated as for the hunting opportunities.

Since there is no season on the exotics you could make some money, especially if you are serious about just thinning the population.

I take it that you are not high fenced, that means that there is a certain amount of possibility of a hunter not seeing anything.

Don't know what prices you would have in mind, but just to ball park it, and again there are many parameters involved, but for a free range hunt on axis and aoudad, I don't think $150.00 for a doe axis/ewe aoudad and $250/$300 for a buck axis/aoudad ram would be out of line.

Can you do both gun and bow?

As for the darting and transporting, you might find someone interested in trying it, but I believe it would be more of a headache than anything else.

Getting set up to dart a free ranging animal, getting the dart into it and then recovering the animal and getting it secured while still under the drug can be a logistical nightmare in a heart beat.

As Kent said if the prices are reasonable, I would be interested and I think you will find several more that would be also.

No sir we are not high fenced. This would not be a guarateed hunt by any means. We first started seeing the axis about 2.5 years ago and I have seen them in person 4 times.
Bow hunting would be fine too.
None of us bow hunt, yet. One of my buddies (texasryan9) is giving me the itch though. I filmed him stalking well within bow range (under 30 yards) of an axis this past weekend. The axis got to walk, we were hoping my dad or our other buddy would get an axis, since Ryan and I both shot one recently and do not need any meat. My dad did take a 27" several hours after we left the ranch.

Also thought about providing 2 meals a day, drinks, snacks and lodging. Like I said we are just weighing our options, kicking it around.
Thanks for the input fellas.

You might want to think about putting together a price for a sat number of hunters and maybe doing a forum hunt. I know a few that might be interested along with myself. Keeps us updated on what you come up with. Also can you tells us alittle about the place. Thanks

350, not a bad idea. The cabin sleeps 7 semi comfortable. It will be atleast a month or so before we decide. Dad and uncle want to take another crack at them. Will update as the thought process rolls and events transpire.

B-I-L,
I'm all about saving money. Me and two buddy's went down last weekend, I believe we filled up 3 times (maybe 4)to get there and back. Tip: A Dodge 4x4 pulling an ATV on a trailor and a motorcycle in the bed = 9.6 MPG.

To answer you first question. Yes it is legal to trap, tranquilize and sell and transport exotics within the state of Texas. It takes time but yes you can set traps with nets and catch quite a few at a time.

If you do use a hunting guide, make sure they carry insurance that covers you as well. A lot of the good outfitters/guide around will have such a policy. If they didn't I wouldn't even mess with them and their fly by night operation.

I'm kinda late hearing (or reading) about this deal, but I would sure be interested in helping you with your aoudad/axis problem. As a matter of fact, I am an insured outfitter and I am also interested personlly in taking an axis and/or an aoudad. Where is your place located? Give me a call if you don't already have something done. 940-453-4224 Chad.

Just wanted to update, We have made 3 trips back to the ranch since last post. We have decided not to sell any hunts. The dozen or so aoudad have not been on camera since June. After going back through all our old cam pics it appears they come through about every 2-3 months. We have also harvested 3 axis and 2 goats in those trips. I appreciate all the offers to help reduce the population and if we decide to offer any hunts I will update again.
Thanks

Axis are a great benefit to any property and have two ruts per year. The summer is a great time to hunt them and they are wonderful eating.
