Wheel gun Question
      #447395 - 06/24/08 06:11 PM

I recently aquired a Taurus .357 on trade. I 'm thinking it is rather old, but I can't figure out the model. On one side of the barell it says, "Taurus- Brasil". On the other side it says " Cal. .357 Magnum. On the right side of the frame it says "Taurus Int. Mfg, Miami, Fla. Just below that under the serial #, it says "Made in Brazil". On the inside of the cylinder it is marked with a "T" and underneath that there is 337. This mark is also under the grips. It has a square butt and a 4" barell. I am also assuming the wood grips are original. No adjustable rear sight. Six shot. where the extractor rod fits into the under side of barell is curved about one inch short of the end of the barell. If anyone can tell me the model of this gun I would appreciate it very much. I can post pics if I need to but I am too lazy. Thanks,
Tyson

Check out Taurus' site, just enter your serial number and it will tell you the model number and year of manufacture. http://www.taurususa.com/products/findmodel.cfm

I tried that and didn't have any luck.

I don't know if the the "337" you saw is in the same place I am referring to, but seems like all older Taurus guns were two digits.

Try this and see if it is the same place.

Open the cylinder and look inside the piece that is attached to the frame where the front of the cylinder pin is attached to the front of the frame. It should have a number (like 82,83,65 etc.) stamped there.

I have a model 83 and there is a small "83" stamped on that piece of the gun.

Hope this helps.

Do like Ralph said and look there.

I had a 44 Special Taurus for a while and thats where the model number was stamped!

With the cylinder open, on the "hinge" part of the cylinder, the extractor rod goes through this piece, it has a small mark that looks like a "T" and then the numbers 337 underneath. I would assume that this would be the model but I can't find any info about a Tarus Model 337.

Ralph and JCB,
You were right. After further review I discovered another mark next to the one mentioned. It is a model 65. Thanks everyone for their help. I still don't know what the "337" is.

Thanks for the update. I am glad to know the answer.
In fact, this afternoon I tried "googling" Taurus model 337 and the only model 337 I found was made by S&W.

For what it's worth, Taurus gets mixed reviews but my model 83(38 Special adjustable sights and wide trigger) is very, very smooth and much more accurate than I am. It is probably a '90-'92 model.

I bet your 65 is a good one also.

We'll see. As I said before I took it on a trade. I definately didn't get hurt. I, like you, have heard mixed reviews. I'm guessing this one is 15-20 years old too. Again thanks for the help.
