A buddy and I went to our new hunting lease this week down in Runnels County. We wake up Saturday morning and there were probably 50 hogs out in the field about 300 yds from the house on the lease. We are in hog heaven!
My buddy takes a shot and all the hogs run away. He is pretty sure he hit one. So, we go looking for a blood trail. Followed the blood trail until we couldn't find any more blood. We looked and looked and no luck. So, we finally gave up.
Later, we set up a game cam near a creek channel and wooded area with oak trees.
That evening, we went out and saw hogs a long way out in a wheat field (900 yds easy). We did a motorized sneak in my 4Runner to close the gap to about 300 yds. At the fence line, we were still around 250 - 275 yds out. We decide to each pick out a hog then count to three and shoot so that we would each have a shot at a hog. I counted, got to three, pulled the trigger on one and it goes down. My buddy also shot, but a split second after mine and the hogs were already on the move. So, we didn't know if he hit or not. By the time we got to the hog (about 10 minutes later), there were ants crawling on it and I hit it a little far back. So, we decided to leave it for the yotes and buzzards.
I was very happy to see my rifle perform pretty well at a distance. I wouldn't take that long of a shot at a deer. But, at a hog, I'm ok with that distance.
We have quite a few hogs to take to thin that herd.
Next time, we will set up a blind and try to get some hogs with a bow. But, I'm bringing my rifle too just in case they don't come within bow range.
