I found out this morning that our hunting party, minus one, drew out for Unit 30 In New Mexico. The one who didn't get drawn made his wife mad and she withdrew his app and he didn't realize it until today. Reminds me of why I'm divorced and will stay this way.

What areas? I thought it was a pretty much done deal for residents to get drawn.

I don't know about Unit 30 but I hunted the Unit to the East, Unit 31, about four years ago. I shot a 2x2 with a 21" spread, lots of mass. I went there because I had seismographed that area the previous January and seen several big bucks. You wouldn't beleive the size of some of the deer living in that area. You should find allot of deer, concentrate on the creek bottoms.
My group drew in unit 36 for the second hunt, Mid-November, I am going to try to concentrate my efforts around Nogal Peak. Has anyone hunted that area, or anywhere in Unit 36 for that matter?
We have had allot of success in Unit 37, but I have never hunted 36.

WELL...didn't get picked this year! Kinda glad with the cost of gas....it would be at least $400.00 just for the gas out and back~~~~!
Had put in for two muzzy cow elk hunts and one bull; oh well, looks like I'll have to hunt up by Meridian this year if I want some elk meat!

(non-resident)I got picked in unit 30 also(first hunt). I guess i'm pretty lucky.....Last year i drew out for deer in unit 36 and bagged an decent 4x4 22inch spread. I have hunted all over 36 Cooner, it's a great unit the harder the country the better the hunting is. If you go to Nogal Peak hunting is best on a horse, there are lots of trails and hunters so get there early. Make sure your up to snuff on your long range shot also.

NMTEXHUNTER, Don't overlook the lowground West of HWY 62 around the Texas line. Find some terrain in the flatland and you will find deer. Time has cut some deep ravines that hold alot of deer. Did you hunt out of Carizozo or Ruidoso when you hunted Unit 36. Any info would be helpful.

Have you hunted Unit 30 before? If not, be glad to give you some areas I have had luck with. I've been in the same area now for 13 years. I love hunting there.

Actually, so was I, along with his B-in-law and cousins. He's completely whipped. He went with us for the first time last year and when the cameras came out for those Kodak moments, he would not get in a picture if someone was holding a beer because he didn't want his wife seeing a camp where alcohol was being drank.

Already have a guide. Been using him for the past 3 hunts in NM. SJRoutfitters. I was bowhunting Unit34 last year also. We hunted near canyon draw. What's your guide's name? Maybe I know him....

Yessir...that was me...Were you one of the two guys that came to camp as I was leaving? I seem to remember two other Texans. If so, how'd you do on the hunt? I saw plenty of elk, however, couldn't bring them in to bow range. I think my elk/cow calling needs some work. I had several within 50yds of me but no clear shot. One day we had a raghorn come within 20yds of me but he was way too small to shoot much less haul back to camp. This year, I hope to get one. Seems to me elk hunting is alot like turkey hunting. Sit, call, listen, sneak, and shoot.

Yea, I think we were there about 2 days before you left. After you left the remaining hunters were me (Johnny), Gary( my uncle) , and John from PA. My uncle got shots at 2 different bulls.A miss at 33 yds., and the other he got good blood. We tracked for about 1000 yds. and it dried up. The first miss was a great bull, the other was just ok. I had a really good bull close 2 different times, but couldn't get in close enough. I kept intersecting him in his bedroom about 10 oclock each morning. It was just too thick with cover and too many cows. We are really dissapointed we didn't get drawn this year.Be sure and hunt hard for us.
