my new bushmaster M4 says .223/5.56 mm on the side.
i know that most bolt guns chambered for .223 should't be shot with mil-spec ammo, but is my gun cleared for take-off?

Yes your bushmater can shoot the 5.56 with no problem. That is what it is designed for.

It is hotter, but not sure how much. I have not been able to find good load data for the 5.56, I have just been loading on the hot side for the .223.

5.56 isn't necessarily hotter, but 5.56 chambers are reamed/throated to handle the heavier bullets, so firing a 5.56 in a commercial 223 chamber could cause trouble.

I think it is pretty much a bolt action concern. I know in my AR15 and Mini 14 both function flawlessly.

Very similar ballistics to the 45-70 but with a .50 bullet out of your M-4. Probably the best hog round ever made. It's also the most fun you can have in a black rifle.
Future Weapons episode about it.

In answer to you'r original question:
The 5.56mm chambers are throated slightly longer to allow the use of the 62gr. & larger bullets. The throat on a commercially chambered .223 Rem. is shorter. Thus, firing commercial .223 Rem amunition in a 556mm chamber is ok. However, 5.56mm mil surplus rounds fired in a commercial .223 Rem chamber can often result in extremely high pressures. If you have any doubts about what chamber you really have, check with a gunsmith about your specific rifle.
