I recieved this email from a friend and thought the THFer's might want to know.
Possible New Deer Regulations in Cooke, Denton, Jack, Wise and other north Texas Counties for the 2009-10 Season.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists are considering proposing a change to hunting regulations affecting white-tailed deer hunting in many counties throughout Texas including Cooke, Denton, Wise and Jack Counties. It started out in 6 southeast Texas counties 5 years ago as an experimental "Antler Restriction” regulation has grown in popularity both with hunters and biologists. Currently this regulation is in effect in 61 counties, including Eastland, Erath, Comanche, Somervell, Bosque, Hamilton, Lampasas, Bell, Coryell, and Williamson. Due to its overall success of improving the numbers of older-age bucks available to hunters, people in other areas of the state have been, asking for the regulation to come to their county.
Under this new regulation, a lawftil buck would be defined as any buck having at east one unbranched antler OR an inside antler spread ofat least 13 inches. The bag limit in the affected counties will be two lawful bucks, no more than one of which may have an inside spread of greater than 13 inches. In other words, a hunter under the new regulation could harvest two bucks with an unbranched antler (commonly referred to as spikes and 3-pointers), or one “spike’ and one buck with an inside antler spread of at least 13 inches.
In order to determine local support for this regulation, TPWD biologists are asking for your input on whether or not you would like to see this regulation passed in Wise, Cooke, Denton, Jack, Montague, and many other north Texas Counties for the hunting season of 2009-10. If you own land or hunt in these counties and would like to voice your support or opposition, please visit the website shown below. If your county isn’t shown in the list of counties on the website, the regulation won’t affect that county. After reading the information provided on that web page, you wiIl be able to provide your input (via email) directly to your local wiIdlife biologist. In order to most accurately gauge support for this new regulation, TPWD is encouraging local landowners to notify their hunters of this comment opportunity as well. Comments from this webpage wiIl be taken until June 2. If proposed, more opportunity for public comment on this potential regulation change will be available during the normal regulations process this inter and the following spring, prior to any officie change. For more detailed information thout the new regulation and thIl instruction on the comment process, please visit the following web address: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/gamemanagment/deer/antlerrestrictions/extra.

You have an interesting out look on the situation, but if you will take the time to do a little research, you will find out that I believe ALL of the counties involved with the antler restrictions and all the ones being proposed are the former 1 Buck East Zone or 1 Buck West Zone counties.
I don't believe ANY of the 2 buck counties and none of the 3 buck counties are even being considered for these regulations.
Also, what is wrong with a person wanting to fill their tags?
They paid for their license and their lease, and all the parephenalia involved with hunting deer, why shouldn't they be able to do what the state says they can legally do?

I just about spit out my drink when I seen that. Now that's funny!! You're right Crazyhorse, this will only allow you to kill another buck that you couldn't before. It seems like a bonus deer would make alot of people happy. I realize it's a little tougher if you're hunting public lands, but rules are rules.

The same proposal has been submitted for McLennan and Hill counties.
So far, in just about every county that this regulation has been imposed, the overall buck quality was improved considerably. Judging from their initial study, the TPWD demonstrated that after 2.5 years, the quality of bucks had improved considerably, as well as the quantity of quality bucks; and, the quality of bucks continued to improve.

These restrictions work, I've seen it were I hunt in bosque and coryell counties, the quality and # of bucks has increased the last 3 years, and everyone who was against the restrictions the first year and now saying they are the best thing to happen. Heres hoping the rest of central texas adopts the antler restrictions.

everyone on my lease and everyone I have talked to, there were some huge deer taken last year, biggest I've seen in all the years hunting there, and I have no doubt it was due to the fact that those mature bucks got the pass the season before, because they were probably borderline as 3 1/2 year olds.

We've (family land) have been taking 4 1/2 yr old plus for YEARS. So their wasn't an Age Structure problem to start with either!!! (roll eyes)
"Everyone" took good deer before ARs. Even a few scrubbs and lots of does.
I guess I could make a graph or chart to prove that too. (roll eyes) Or do a hunter survey.
Let's face it,
We won't get anywhere here, you have fallen for their hook line sinker. And I haven't

Whatever phillip, we've seen results and you don't seem to notice a difference at yalls place. I would just bet your area doesn't nearly have the hunting pressure ours does.

Soooooo,
Who is responsible for the hunting pressure in your area?
I know who is responsible for it in mine !! AND IT DOESN'T START WITH TP&W !!!!

Some of us, don't have thousands of acres to hunt, and have no control over what our neighbors do with out some restrictions. I like the antler restrictions, no they aren't perfect, but better than nothing. I wish there was a legal way to kill some of the trash bucks.

All you have to do is buy a hunting license...the rest is up to you...NOT TPWD !!
And you do have access to thousands of acres....public (for $48), or you can go private for considerably more $$. It is up to you !$! Now, if you want a certain type of deer you can get it....No more excuses, no TPWD!!

our place is 300 acres, there are 4 different bordering landowners, and 3 of them lease their places for deer hunting, the antler restrictions were a great solution in our situation.

I own my land, and want to hunt it. Whether you like the restrictions or not, they are coming. I personally like them. Yes thousands of acres that without restrictions would have most of the 2 year old bucks killed. The only people that can control the deer harvest are the ones that own thousands of acres. I can control what I do, and what happens on my land, but only tpwd can control what happens on the adjoining land.

We are happy with the restrictions, we aren't the ones whining.
