Texas Youth Target Shooting Gala Event Set June 21
DALLAS — Young target shooters from across Texas and their families are invited to spend a day of fun and competitive target shooting during the first annual Texas Youth Invitational June 21 at the Elm Fork Shooting Sports complex.

The day-long festivities will include competitive shotgun clay target shooting for youth ages 9-18, regardless of experience, and a host of fun target related activities and other outdoors related events and exhibits. The non-profit Youth Target Foundation is producing the event, in cooperation with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Scholastic Clay Target Program, Texas 4-H Shooting Sports and a host of sponsors.

Similar events will be planned at ranges throughout Texas in the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009.

The Texas Youth Invitational will feature a 100 target, five-stand sporting clays competition, where shooters test their shooting skills at clay targets resembling bird or small game hunting scenarios, such as a flushing quail or a passing dove. This competition will serve as an official event for the Texas 4-H Shooting Sports and the Scholastic Clay Target Program and features a Lewis-based scoring system providing additional trophy award opportunities.

"This event partially represents the efforts of a new statewide coalition of shooting sports programs, ranges, agencies and organizations coming together to provide even more opportunities for getting youth involved in the outdoors," said Steve Hall, education director for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "Top Texas ranges like Elm Fork in Dallas, and youth shooting sports programs such as 4-H, the largest of its kind in the country, and the Scholastic Clay Target program, a program aimed at getting more schools and youth groups involved in the shotgun sports, are combining their efforts to introduce thousands more to fun, healthy, lifelong outdoor pursuits."

As one way to accomplish the goal of the coalition, a new kid’s clinic will be held for first-timer shooters, who can then compete on an abbreviated rookie course.

"Our motto for this event is ‘No Kid Left Indoors,’" said Jeanie Almond, event coordinator and founder of the Youth Target Foundation. "We’re making this a fun, family-oriented event with everything from clay target shooting to fly fishing instruction and dog handling exhibitions. Any kid that shows up and wants to shoot will not be turned away."

There will also be an opportunity for young shooters to pair up with an adult shooter of their choosing for a Pro Kid/Pro Am adult team competition to help raise funds for future youth target shooting events and programs.

"In this event, the kid gets to select the adult they want to shoot with and earn tickets they can use toward merchandise raffles," said Almond. "We’re also inviting disadvantaged youth from Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Exodus Foundation to participate."

In addition to the shooting events, attendees can try their hand at pellet gun shooting, archery and a variety of free fun games.

Competitors will be treated to a free wild game harvest and barbecue dinner prepared by the Dallas Woods and Waters Club.

Registration sign-in will be held Saturday, June 21 at 7:30 a.m. followed by a mandatory safety orientation at 8:15 a.m. The shoot starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration fee is $75 and includes Sporting Clays Five Stand, BBQ Dinner and awards, including drawings for merchandise and shotguns to be given away. Practice rounds and games cost $10 per round. Concessions (breakfast and lunch) will be available at the range. Additional dinner tickets for non-competitors cost $10.

Registration and more information about the event is available online at www.elmfork.com/nscaevents or by calling (972) 556-0103.

Did anybody else go to this? What a terrific all day kids event! And can you believe this, Ryan won a Beretta AL 390 in a novice drawing! They called 2 other kids but they weren’t there to win, then they call Ryan’s name, when they did, he was a sleep on the ground with Molly lol, the boy was wupped, there at 7:45AM, 100 rounds of sporting clay and 50 rounds of 5 stand, and the drawings were like at 7:00PM after the BBQ, 75 rounds is the most he has ever shot before, and this was his first time to ever shoot in a tournament, my first time to ever attend one. He was so excited to win that gun, I’m not sure how many shotguns they gave away, but it was a lot. Ryan has a 20 ga single shot that he has out grown, so he has been saving to buy a new shotgun for this hunting season (I told him he has to save and buy his next gun), but he only saved $80 so far lol, so we weren’t sure what he was gonna do when hunting season started, he has been shooting the range guns in 4H this off season.

Below are some pics thought I would share, my wife took the pics below!! First Pic there me and Ryan, Ryan shooting the Woods course, we just getting started with that first pic.

Here is the best pic I ever took of a flying clay, I was trying to get it breaking!!

I got another pic of a clay flying there if you look close!

Here is Ryan and the other 4H kids Ryan was grouped with, man what great kids they are!

Here is a pic of me and my little girl, she is begging me to shoot, so she will start shooting very soon!! She is a little fire cracker!

Here is a pic of Ryan when he won the shotgun, that is a 391 there, but he won a 390, that pic is with Jeanie Almond Elm Fork and Steve Hall TPWD.

We were one of the last few to leave because we had to do all the FFL work for the gun, below was the last pic I took, Ryan walking to the truck with his new gun, he would have slept with that gun last night if I let him, lol.

Be thanks to Jeanie Almond at Elm Fork!! You guys need to be sure to take your kid next year, I’m pretty sure it will be 3rd Saturday in June again, so put it on your calendar now! And you guys should get your kids involved with 4H, just give Jeanie a call!

Wow! Congratulations Ryan !! We had a good time at the shoot with all of our Dallas 4-H shooters and young shooters that were present from all over the state.
Kyle and Nick had fun after shooting 5-stand and the Woods course when they shot a practice round of Whiz-Bang. The #4 target was set up as a teal that weht straight up like a rocket! That was a fun target! Congratulations on that new shotgun !! Look forward to seeing it at our next 4-H practice Thursday at Elm fork. Kerry and Kyle Ming

Told you he would be on top!!!! Get ready for the tournaments now!!

WOW GREAT STORY GUY AND RYAN!!!!
Congratulations to Ryan and all the youth participatates, and the adults that put this fine event on.
Just can’t beat a day in the outdoors learning to shoot -wild game harvest and barbecue dinner- then winning a shotgun to boot.
Glad to see some great activities for the families/youth of today. Keep them out of trouble and off the streets and passes on a fine heritage. He will be limiting out and putting them in the bag this year.

Yeah, next year I’ll have to remember to bring 2 cases of shell!!

Welcome to the forum Kerry!!

Kerry just recently got certified as a 4H instructor, and is a big supporter of the Dallas 4H club, his son Kyle is an ace shot, but all those 4H kids are incredible shots, Ryan has really learned a ton from these kids in only 3 months he has been involved.

All he really wanted was something other than his single shot 20 ga for this up coming hunting season, he would have been happy with a 20 ga pump, and thrilled with any auto.

He has not studied all his options, so he really did not have strong feelings on the gun he wanted, I have not studied it either, so I have not had any recommendations for him. He has been shooting the 20 ga range guns in 4H practice which are 391s, and he liked those a lot and has been wanting to try the 12 ga youth 391 they have. I told him if he wants a 391, he better save his money.

I wanted him to buy his next “nice” long-term gun with his own money (12 ga), my thought really was that I would buy him a 20 ga auto, because that will be a hand me down to his little sister, I would not want him to spend his own money on a gun, then have to give it to his little sister. So my thought was to buy a 20 ga auto, that would take care of him this next hunting season, and he could continue to save for his next “grown up” gun.

That 12 ga is still a bit too much gun for him, I’m gonna see what we can do to have it fitted for him, but I’m tempted to buy him a 20 ga auto anyway for this up coming hunting season because 1) I know his little sister will use it one day and 2) that 12 ga may be too much for him to carry with duck hunting, we normally take some pretty big hikes thru mud and slop duck hunting, he needs to be able to hold his own, I'm getting to old to carry his stuff!!

I like your logic. Besides, you'll probably spend close to the amount of a 20 gauge semi as you would modifying his gun, but with the 20 gauge you have 2 guns instead of 1. When he grows some more he can have it fit to his adult frame and use it the rest of his life if he wants.

What's the weight difference between the gun he won and a possible 20ga? To me it doesnt seem like it would really be all that much and really not enough to justify buying a 20ga. Buying in for your girl is a good reason but I'd wait on that. For me it would come down to how much it costs to modify the 12ga...it really doesnt seem like it would be all that much to change out stocks...then later you can put the original one back on.

As far as recoil goes you can get some very lite 12ga loads that would kick the same or less than a standard 20ga load.

Not sure what kind of duck loads the 20ga shells typically come in but I know you can get 1oz 2 3/4" 12ga loads very easy. And you can find 1oz lead target/dove loads in 12ga very easy too...in fact you can find lighter loads as well if you go to a place like sportsmens or cabelas.

Those are good points Marc!

I can say that recoil is not an issue with Ryan, but weight of the gun is. Weight is the biggest issue with young kids based on what I have seen with my own kids. Just holding the gun up properly, that was the reason I got Ryan the 20 ga single shot, at the time when he was 9 yrs old, it was the only gun he could hold up properly. He could not hold up a 20 ga pump at the time, or I would have just bought that.

My little girl can not hold up his 20 ga single shot properly right now, so I got her a .410 single shot, she can hold that up correctly just fine.

I think with hiking the extra weight probably does not make much difference, that is a good point.
