I am soon going to be building one of the tripod feeders where the barrel hangs from a winch cable in the top of the tripod.
Are there any suggestions on which timer/motor I should buy that is good quality and will last a while?
I plan on buying a solar panel to keep the battery charged.

Seems like a good timer, especially for the price. I ma new to feeders. How do I know what motors this works with? Are they all universal. or just a specific connector to look for? I am a newbie here.....Please bare with me...

this timer will work with any 6 or 12 volt motor up to two amps most motors have two wire s and the timer will have 4 clearly marked wires, two to the motor and two to the battery. I am out at canyoun lake and could meet with you to show them to you . these are new in box .

pay the money...buy a spincast. i have had two and both have never stopped running. bought both of them in 1996. two thows a day year round for 12 years. i will never have anything different

I have had a lot of feeders thought the years....The only ones that I have left are the onetime lifetime models. You can find them on sale for around $80.00 they work great and if one breaks it cost you shipping and handling to get it fixed. I have never had one take over 2 weeks to get fixed.

Spincast and bossbuck. Bossbuck is the only one I know that you can turn days off completely, it is going to be very beneficial to me this year.
If there is another brand that you can program to not throw Sunday eve. - Wed. when Im not there please inform.

You mights as well just go on and get you an HCR. These things are built like a tank! Simple to operate, tuff, reliable and have served me well for years, plus they have a lifetime warranty on the timer! While your at it, get the rechargeable battery and the solar charger with the armored cable.
I have been through so many different kinds feeders through the years it's not even funny. The only ones that are not in a bucket in my barn going to waste are the HCR's, they are where they should be, out in the field slinging corn.

Get the bossbuck, this summer (if it's not available already) there will be a new spin plate and a remote conrol for the feeder mechanism. JMO

Now I remember why I don't place times on the feeders I build. Kid if you are going to be build a winch feeder yourself rember two things be sure to use a brake winch and use square tubing because it is more sturdy. If you do it right they will last you a lifetime and you will never regret it, good luck.

I was planning on using 1 1/2 in sq tubing with 1/8 walls. I had not yet looked at winches thank you for the advice of the brake winch.

You are welcome to look at the ones I build on my website. I in short use 2" for the legs (14ga.) and 2.5" (14ga) on the head. The top plate is 10" X 1/4" plate steel. I could do some things cheeper but I still make a few dollars on them and they are built in such a manner that they can withstand almost anthing, which is what I and my customers are looking for. In the long run it is cheeper to do it once. Good Luck

OnTime feeders are built to last and have a life time warranty. I own several of them and are very satisfied. I realy like the one with the solar panel wrapped around it

We run all spincast and Texas hunter, they both work well, but the texas hunter was cheaper, and is made of meatal, so I think it will be longer lasting even though, I have had my spincast for about 14 years now.

If I had to rebuild all mine, I'd try to find some larger barrels. Maybe build the tripod well enough to to hold up 100 gallons or more of corn, and weld 2 55 gallon drums together. I don't know but the 55's and the occassional 85's I have are creating killer fuel bills. Might take that into consideration also.

I have said it before, I will say it again.....can't go wrong with the Texas Hunter set-up. Not very expensive and is durable. I have had mine for 8-10 years...no problems!
