My dad is 76 and wants to make a trip to a border town in Mexico. We lived in El Paso for a long time and went to Juarez to drink, eat and shop. I think Juarez is a bit more risky than it was years ago. I was thinking about taking him to Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras. Anyone have any comment or suggestions? Thanks, Dennis

You might try Cd. Acuna across from Del Rio. Save ya about 60 miles and it has been one of the cleanest safest towns along the border. Several good places over there. Good luck.

If you're going to spend any money at all, don't go to any border town, that's not Mexico. All border towns attract trash. Go to Monterrey or Saltillo (I prefer Saltillo)That is Mexico.

Acuna is about 60 miles from our place. I've been a few times, my pop goes over there quite a bit, by himself sometimes (knucklehead). Not any problems, but I would not reccomend going to any border town. You can find just as good food in Brackettville, Rock Springs or Del Rio, prettier views in the Texas Hill Country and if you want cigars or whisky I'd just pay a little more to buy it here. If i had to pick one it would be Acuna for a day trip or dinner excursion. If you want to go to "Mexico" then go to Satillo or even Acapulco (touristy, but still not over Americanized like Cancun.)

Heck, just go to the corner of Business 121 and 35 in Lewisville. You will swear and be darned that you are in Mexico.
Me and a couple of buddy's go to Port Mansfield every year to fish. While we're down there, we always jump over to Matamoros. I'm no expert on Mexico, as this is the only place I've been, but we always have a good time while we're there. Lots of shops and restaurants. Don't know if they have any donkey shows there though.

i have not been in a couple of years, but since 01 i haven't stepped foot into nuevo laredo. the only place i've gone or will even consider going, minus cozumel, monterey,or cancun is piedras or acuna. even then i'm not chopping at the bit to go anymore. my dad goes over through piedras at least a couple of time's a year to help set up feeders and such. to him it's no problem we've been doing it for years. there is some good food down their, but i prefer just eating at matt's el rancho or garcia's,their local and you don't have to worry about getting that red light.

My wife and I went to Piedras Negras about a month ago. Moderno's Resuturant was recomended to us and we had a great time and an outstanding meal. We took a cab over and the Moderno's Driver took back to our Motel. His name is Frank Gonzales; He will pick you up and take you back across, No cost, just tips. You can call him at 011-521-044-878-10-84-392(Mexican cell). Doesn't look like a phone #, but it is. Taxi over was about $25.

Violence in Mexico spills across US border
WASHINGTON (AP) — Three Mexican police chiefs have requested political asylum in the U.S. as violence escalates in the Mexican drug wars and spills across the U.S. border, a top Homeland Security official told The Associated Press.
..... In general, violence along the U.S. border has gone up over the years. Seven frontline border agents were killed in 2007, and two so far in 2008. Assaults against officers have also shot up from 335 in fiscal 2001 to 987 in fiscal 2007.
There have been 362 assaults against officers during the first four months of 2008, according to Border Patrol statistics. The pattern has been that when more security resources are deployed along the U.S. border, violence against officers spike in response.
