Wonder how the old timers kept there rifles and BP pistols free of rust?
I suspect a lot of them were just rusty and dirty.

I would think rifles were treated the same as rifles now days. The men that loved and respected their firearms took good care of them. The men that didn't, didn't.

The "old timers" kept their guns in great shape, because if they didn't..... they wouldn't eat.... or in some cases they could die! They needed them to hunt... and... to defend themselves.
They would wrap their guns in an oil-soaked rag, or use a paraffin coated rag along with the oil rag to store them. Most gun owners did take pride in their weapons, since it was usually one of the most expensive item that they owned!

Remember Hatchet Jack from "Jeremiah Johnson"? He was very proud of his Hawken rifle and it was a good rifle because "it kilt the bear that kilt me."
The above posts are right. They took good care of their rifle or they probably didn't last long...
