Any Luck with Full Strut Decoys?

This was my first year using a full strut decoy on Rios. It scared away more birds than it brought in. I tried it in several different configurations (with hen, with multiple hens, squating hen etc.) but with little success. It could of been I was not in an area with a dominant gobbler. Not sure. Would like to here your suggestions and experieces.

Well I cant help you with the decoys. I have have not used any with any success. I find the best way for me is a good place to set up and just work the birds. Ive had more luck that way. I dont know if that what you wanted to know are not But thats what I do.

Dryland, thanks for the response, any input helps. If I need to keep my decoy in the truck, thats what I will do. So you don't use any decoys at all?

Re: Any Luck with Full Strut Decoys?

Used one with limited success. Birds killed over Pretty Boy were skirting around the decoys. Never had a bird come right in and commit. In the right place I think they will work well. In a season like last year with so many young birds it was hard to use one.

TDBDuckhunter, glad to hear it was not just me. I thought I was doing something wrong. We also had lots of young birds (jakes and what i call satelite gobblers (2yr olds?) in our area. They wanted nothing to do with my pretty boy. Ended up taking one some considerable distance from the decoy. Did you try other setups with or without the full strutter? That thing can be a pain in the [censored] to setup.....and noisy too (as you probably know). Thanks

We did try a couple of different setups. I think this year was just a strange year, or the year of the jake.

No Sir I dont use any at all. I just never had any luck using them. I have a set I got from Cabela I always keep them at the house. Now my brother in-law he uses his on 2 type of birds. I hope this helps you.

Thanks Dryland, from what I have learned so far, I will back off on the decoys until the right breeding conditions arise
(what ever that may be).

Re: Any Luck with Full Strut Decoys?

I don't use a full strut but did try a jake decoy with my hens this year. It really didn't even interest the gobblers. I had hens come in though and beat the heck out of my hen decoys , apparently for being with the jake!

Re: Any Luck with Full Strut Decoys?

I have never used a decoy for turkey hunting. I try to find the roost and start to work the birds early while the are just waking up. Start with purrs. Then locate them. Then its just a stalk and call war from there. We have taken quite a few long beards off our property. I stalk through heavy woods and military crawl after them, but it works. We have a beard wall in the trailer to vouch for it.

CEdwards, I am getting the hint I dont even need a decoy. What county do you hunt?? Would love to see a picture of your "beard wall" Take Care
