Opinion on the Flag

It goes like this;
A neigbor goes to my parents home at 9:30 at night and tells my Mom that she needs to take the American Flag down everynight. He tells her he is a marine blah blah blah, it is not against the law or a code but is supposed to be taken down at night unless it is illuminated or something. He rambles on and on and also tells her our dogs bark a lot and counted how many dogs she had(4) to see if we had more than the city allowed. He also knocked on the door and asked to speak to my Dad, not her.
Facts:
1. This old balz guy removes his flag nightly but one of his flags is pink because it is so faded
2. My mom is pushing 70
3. The Flag was put up by my nephew at his going away party and is now in Kuwait as we speak
4. It is illuminated by solar lights but not bright because it is by the pool and we cant get power to where it is in the highest part of the yard.
5. My Grandfather was a Colonel in the Army in WW2 and Korea
6. The guy has always been a butthole and seems sheltered to life

What do you think is right? Take down the flag daily or should my Mom tell him to get the FOFF her porch?

My Dad listened to the whole conversation and couldn't even go to the door because he would have punched him in the trachea.
I personally probably would have told him to get the FOFF my porch with a lot more choice words.

I'm a Marine and just probably out rank this other Marine, so tell your mother for me to tell your neighbor that our flag flys proudly day and night in the bright light of freedom.

Tell this neighbor that he has two choices, 1. Fly the flag day and night or 2. Not fly the flag at all. I would choose to fly the flag.

If he has a problem with this advice, ask him to sign up for the THF enter the OT section. My handle here is a777pilot and my call sign in the Corps was Polack.

Re: Opinion on the Flag

I'm with a777pilot on this one. I know there are "flag rules of etiquette" and think most people have no clue that they exist. I would rather see the flag flown 24/7, and not be illuminated at night, than live where it can't/won't be flown.
On the other hand, I hate to see the flag disgraced by someone flying one that looks like it's been through a war. There is a guy down the road from me that has a nice flag pole in front of his house which sets a good 100yds off of the road. Most days he has a flag flying, but it looks like he gets them from a stack of flags that have been retired. I can't remember ever seeing one that looks like it was put up new!

My opinion of your neighbor is that he needs to mind his own business. My opinion on the flag is that it should be taken down at night unless it is lit up. The US Code is pretty clear on the matter.

§174. Time and occasions for display
(a) Display on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in open; night display
It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

Speaking of which, here is mine,...If ANYBODY wants to fly their AMERICAN flag within the borders of the good ol' USA, they should be allowed to do so WITHOUT some statue quoting rectal ranger telling them what some books sais is right! I have flown a flag on my property for as long as I have lived 24/7 and have not nor will I ever take it down for anybody or anything other than to put up a NEW one!

Your disregard for the rules of this forum that you demonstrated when you resorted to calling me an obscene name are exceeded only by the lack of patriotism you display with your utter disregard for the Patriotic Customs as outlined in the UNITED STATES CODE. Do you also refer to the US Constitution as "some book". You should be ashamed of yourself.

Re: Opinion on the Flag

There are specific rules concerning the displaying and handling of the American flag. The section of federal law that pertains to flag etiquette is commonly referred to as the Flag Code.

Here are general guidelines:

• The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.

• The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless it's designed for inclement weather use.

• The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing.

• The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for decoration. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

• The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose.

• The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers and members of patriotic organizations.

• The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it.

• The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything.

• When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

• The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

• When a flag becomes worn, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Ask yourself a simple question: Ever drive by a cemetery with lots of little American flags on the graves? I want to see you go up to the loved ones of those that are buried there and tell them that they have to take those flags down at night.

The code is just that, code, NOT law. There are NO criminal or civil penalties associated. The real issue is, fly the flag or not fly the flag. I say fly the flag. Mine is up day and night. Yes for part of the night it is artificially illuminated. Trust me there is not a single person in my neighborhood that has ever come up to me and told me I was wrong.

If that lady wants to fly our flag day and night to honor those that are in harms way. Let her!

I wore a flight jacket and flight suit for many years that had and American flag on them. Should I have walked around at night with a little flash lite?

One true statement that I once heard an Air Force General state was: Rules are made to guide the weak.

If that Marine wants to do something, he ought go over and explain the code to that lady then tell her if she can't put up a lite, he understands and thank her for her efforts to support our troops. He should be there to protect her, NOT give her a hard time. She is showing NO disrespect.

So we probably should not take 171 so seriously either, after all it is just a code.

"§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart."

I guess we all interpret or observe the code differently.

Re: Opinion on the Flag

That is true. It is just code. But the disrespect of the flag and our National Anthem is a question of character. To compare this elderly lady trying to respect her family member's service in Iraq to the lack of respect for this country by B. Hussein Obama is to stretch an analogy to the breaking point.

B. Hussein Obama showed disrespect to the flag, the Anthem and to all Americans and such was his intent.

This lady's intent is to show respect.

Question for you: B. Hussein Obama did NOT abide by the code on conduct for the National Anthem. Was he sued in civil court or charged with a criminal offense under this code?

Your up.

This is fun.

I don't recall posting anything about an "elderly lady", the analogy that you referred to was your leap of logic, not mine and you left out the "widows, orphans and disabled".

I did take exception to your lack of consistency regarding the application of the US Code.

BIL,

I agree with what most have said on here about the neighbor minding his own business, however as a Marine veteran I think we(any military branch) sometimes feel that it is our business. Granted what you do in your own yard is not any of our business, after all we have that freedom because of the men and women who fought for it. Now, I believe where the neighbor truely went wrong was in his apparent presentation. I whole heartedly believe it isn't what you say as much as it is how you say it. I personally feel that the flag should be flown 24/7 as described in the code. JMO

Love the pic!

If there has to be a choice between flying it or not, then by all means fly it. But these days there shouldn't have to be a choice between flying it in the dark or not flying it at all. Maybe some of the guys on here can help you figure out how to get that flag lit up so that your mother won't have to worry. What kind of problem are you having with the lighting?
