I had a Stoeger 20/28 gauge combo and had nothing but trouble with it. Never could get the 20g barrel to shot consistent, some times it would fire both barrels and sometimes it wouldn't. And sometimes it would fire both at once. Sent back to factory and still didn't work. Sent to gunsmith and still wouldn't work. Now I loved the 28g it flat out would hammer the dove but it didn't have interchangeable chokes, so I traded it off and got a Brittany sXs and I love it. Also my friend had a stoeger sXs 20/12 and the same problem. One barrel worked fine and the other one didn't. Also after about 200 rounds the stock on my Stoeger started to crack.

Yeah, you caught me. I put contact info and links in my signature for my promotion.
Whether that's your info in your sig or not, you pimped it for months before/during dove season last year and your starting again, already.
Btw, I was on the woodson lease two seasons ago, when they also offered it as duck lease. It sucked. Very few ducks and most of the dove were gone after the first weekend. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I've never paid for a dove hunt but I really wouldnt go so far to say paying is for suckers. I mean if you don't pay for a lease or a day lease then you either are paying for the land you own, or hunting on someone elses land who you will owe at the very least a favor. About the only dove hunting you do with no cost or risk of future obligation is public land hunts...but I've yet to find too many public dove spots that are all that great.
Personally I like the set up I have...I hunt on friend's land and normally give them shells, some beers, offer to drive and that's my payment.

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

I paid for a day lease once in san antonio, and it was worth every penny. never seen doves fly like they did on this place. it was non stop action, 5 man limit in 45 minutes.
but if I am going to pay to hunt I am going to save that money and put it towards ducks or geese...my free dove places are good enough for me

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

I usually go with my brother in law in Castroville or Devine for opening weekend. The times that I ahve gone it was unreal. We all killed are limit in 45mins to an hour. There were times that there were so many birds that you could limit out with a sling shot. After opening weekend I hunt at our place south of Coleman. Last year it was slow for the first couple of weeks and then was pretty solid from there on out. If you didn't limit in the afternoon than you need to go back to the range. I can't wait for Dove season 08. I think that it might be my favorite season. The best part about it is that you can do it with friends and drink beer and and talk while hunting. Man I can't wait.

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

Here in Coleman co. I can safely say that most ranchers sell deer hunting. But when it comes to dove hunting, everybody and their dogs is selling dove hunts.. Motels stay booked from year to year and there are very few leases. Mostly day hunts. If someone has a free hunt from year to year I think thats great but the majority of the dove hunting population if they are not already on a lease have to pay to hunt!

As I said in my post above on this issue...I think everyone has to pay in one shape or form and if you pay for a lease it doesnt make you a sucker...but I don't think the majority pay for dove hunting leases or day leases. I would think the majority have land they own that they can hunt on or know someone that will let them hunt on the land...now this "Free" hunt might actually be in exchange for something else so it's almost never totally free...but it might only cost you a case of beer or a few boxes of shells.

Easy, suckers pay 100.00 + a day to shoot AT doves. Some would rather free lance and hunt, take what they can get. I am not paying to hunt doves. Did it one time in my whole life and swore never again. Would rather miss out then pay to hunt dove! Until folks wise up and stop paying crazy money to hunt, it's not going to get any better. Also many times an "outfitter" will find where the doves are. Offer farmer say 1000.00 for the right to hunt. He agrees and then the outfitter will turn around and sup lease it for day hunts at say 150.00 a day. So it's like double dipping and the ones that really suffer are the hunters. When I could have went to the same farmer and paid the 1000.00 and got 10 of my buds to pitch in. It's just all about the money now a days. I do not like it and I will not support it, simple as that! If a hunter does his leg work, he can network with friends and co workers and odds are someone has land to hunt. Doves are pretty much every where, some more than others but you can still kill a few just about anyplace.

how is it double dipping? seems like to me the outfitter did his leg work and found a deal, and in turn making some money. With the same amount of leg work you could have had that same place and gotten 10 buddies to pitch in.
hunting is big business, if you can make a buck then i have no problem with you. i am not saying that you should screw people, but if the market around DFW supporst $100 day hunts then good for them. That would not fly around here, thank goodness

Yeah, there are plenty of landowners that don't want to deal with individuals and rather use an outfitter. MOST, though will not let an outfitter make $10,000 day leasing while he only makes $1,000. That is extreme. We were on a place years ago where the landowner leased to the outfitter and then saw all of the guys limiting weekend after weekend and then decided to lease it himself the next year. Unfortunately birds are not guaranteed year in and year out so that is the risk if a landower leases a single field all by himself. No birds, no money. If he goes with an outfitter he will get paid no matter what.

That will never happen, and it will not get better. Folks that pay do not have free connections, and many would rather pay then look for something for free, and some cannot even bother with looking for something cheap. Why would someone that is loaded with money bother with trying to find a free hunt? Doctors, lawyers, top excutives with large corporations, guys that dove hunt maybe 2 times a year, why would these guys bother with looking for free hunts? Unfortunantly, these segment of the hunting market is driving market prices for everyone. That is just reality, nothing we can say or do will change it.

That's a good post. I have really only been hunting for 5 years now, I had a free private place to dove hunt in the beginning just north of Dallas I got lucky and stumbled on, that has been develope now, then I did public, that sucked, then I tried a season lease ($125 for the season), that sucked, then last year I did day leases for the first time, found many place west for $25 to $30 a day, and they were real good concidering dove hunting in west texas last season was not very good, but $25 to $30, that is a good price, not much more than a case of beer, and really a drop in the bucket when you consider the overall cost of hunting, shells, gas, accomidations, etc...

$25 to 30 is not the same as 100.00 to 125.00. I would even pay if it was that low! I have also been known to kick the landowners a few bucks or steaks or whatever to hunt as a thank you! But when folks want 100.00 + to kill 15 birds, well that is a rip off! My .02!

Well then a dove lease makes perfect sense for you !
That's why I no longer day hunt dove as $50-100 a day is toooooooo much
Let's say you dove hunt 12 days total in Sept & Oct !
You pay $200 for the season divided by 12 hunts thats $16.6 a day !
Not to mention a variety of 6-7 different sunflower fields to hunt
Makes sense to me

Makes sense to me
True but who knows where the birds are going to be, this far out ?????

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!
|

Somewhere in those posts Heat made a good comment that I think gets overlooked by many. He mentioned something I talk about alot and that's networking. Making friends and getting to know people is how I find most of my hunting spots. When I get invited to a place I remember that and repay the favor sometimes with "gifts" like beer, shells, buying lunch, driving etc...and sometimes by inviting them on a hunt.
Buddy of mine has a prime dove spot I make sure he knows I appreciate him letting me hunt that spot by giving him some things as well as inviting him on some duck hunts later in the year.
But I spend a lot of time talking to people about hunting, where they go, etc. I serve on my local DU committee...I go to a lot of DU and Delta events. It takes effort and time to build relationships and I can see how for some it might just be easier to just pay and that's fine.

Yes, good post Marcstar. I think IMHO thats the way things should work. Only rebuttal to that is when there is partnerships involved in lands and ranches. Sometimes its next to impossible to have your friends out to hunt when you have your partners to think about.
Recently I hunted at one of the forum members place and we agreed (all partners) that we would exchange a hunt with him at a later date. Now thats okay but when it comes to individuals sometimes things aren't quite the same. I would love to be able to ask all the guys I grew up with to come and enjoy hunting and fishing but I have co-owners I'm obligated too. Does this make sense?

Sure it makes sense cool hand..that's the position you are in. None of the places I hunt have such complications...otherwise I guess I wouldnt be there.

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

Anyone who pays $100 for a day hunt probably has enough money they don't have to worry about it. I pay $200 for a season west of Graham and probably go around 25 times per year (less than $10 a day). The reason I pay is because the guy has about 20 fields around the area that he is constantly scouting and I can call at any time and he will let me know where the birds are. I also have several places I can hunt for free which I generally take the landowner with me and pay for the brew. I think we can all sit and argue about the topic of paying or not, but the main reason I do is that gives me more options.

Paying no problem here. If I could find 7 leases I would lease them . One for each day of the the week. I might have a small problem but thats all right.

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

Not sure what the problem is, hunting of any kind has become a business and a big one all across the U.S..
If a person does not want to pay, or has places they can go for free or maybe in trade for some beer or a couple of steaks or some fence work, more power to them.
As has been said however, some folks don't have those connections and don't have the time or means to make such connections.
They want to hunt, and if they are willing to pay the price being asked, so what.
Yes, it is going to make it harder and harder to find places to go for free or at a lower price, but that is why it is called a Free Enterprise System.
Just because we don't like it, doesn't mean we should belittle people that are willing to take advantage of the system on either side, and yes, I am a guide, but if I want to go hunt elk, I hire an outfitter, because I don't have the equipment or knowledge or time to do it myself.

As I stated before, I pay for my lease. Its very productive, convienant enough that I can go everyday of the season after work and do well.
I don't have to scout, ask permission, and I'm hunting with a great group of guys..A win-win situation for me...and I'm not rich by any means

I'll be hunting in Culberson county this year for sure. Other than that I just hunt where the wind takes me. I never pay to dove hunt. I am lucky enough to have lots of buddys with hunting spots and a few of my own.

I hunt some free places also and I hunt places that I lease. Anything free is great but I don't have a problem paying to hunt. I just like to hunt something different each time I hunt and not burn the places out. My pup [Sally] says she prefers places that have shade and a tank to cool off in.

Good points sallysue , I've got a place to hunt for free in Royce City with my X boss ! Heck I remember back in the 70's & 80's while growing up in San Antiono as we would pay $10 for day hunts & others fields for free !
We use to pay $125 for a one field lease in Hamilton from 2000-2005 but the land owner would not plow or plant, dove where hit and miss & it would burn out quickly. We still had some great times there with Jeff and lots of friends but we depended on the tanks to produce mostly!
Started networkin with texas hunting friends and found out about a $200 lease with 6-7 differnet fields near Graham, Olney, Woodson, etc with sunflower thanks to my friend Brent We Just love it now so I Figured I'd share it with folks on here as some like it & want more info, and some don't!

Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

Dove hunting has always been the icing on the cake for us. We have a couple different species of dove, mourning, white wing and a species with a black ring around their neck and big like a pidgeon. Nothing better than fresh dove on the grill wrapped in bacon and jalepenos. We have dove year round they nest here.

One thing's for sure........get ready to pony up a lot more for ammo. It's up to about $6 per box now for the cheapest shells AND there's another increase coming in September. If you're one of those 'five shells per bird' boys this is going to get expensive.
|
|
|
Re: Dove Hunting 2008 !!!

Yup I heard the same thing about the increase.
I guess it's a good thing I still have a couple of cases from last year.

I still have plenty of dove loads from last year.
If they are around $4 in August I'll buy a case. They are usually pretty competitively priced then because of the volume that they have purchased.

I called the sale last year and it never happened. Two years ago their sale was $2.89 a box. Last year it was $3.89 at the lowest. Now the regular price is $5.99! $3.89 was the regular price last year.

Awesome sounding place. BTW where is this and do you have the contact info or web site???? 200 bucks is just unheard of, in todays cut throat dove hunting world. You really need to put this on the outfitters and guides forum if there is openings
