Killin' chairs-need pics! Added some of my own..

Haven't posted in awhile...things have been nuts! With the price of diesel being what it is, I decided to upgrade my Camry to a 4runner and hunt out of that! SO... I'm building a combination hitch rack and predator killin chair for the back. This is not a large platform multi-person type affair, but one swiveling chair, a platform to get into the chair, and the chair itself will have the shooting rest and light mount welded to it (the chair is already built).

I already have several plans of which way to go to finish out the killin' chair part (the rack and mount for the upright is done) I'm just wanting some pics of anybody's killing chair setups. I'm most interested in the platform setup because I want this to be as safe as possible! No need in getting my neck broken trying to bust critters...

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics!

Get an old but still good computer desk chair(with arms), take the rollers off, screw or weld the legs to the floor(where u stand) of the rack.

I'll get pics of ours later.

Don't know how well you can see this. The chair is on a pole so it come on and off easy when driving down the highway. The rests are welded to the chair.

Ok here is what we have...the first one is the old desk chair thingy:

these 2 are of a metal base welded on a metal platform & just some simple swivle boat type chairs, bayourat can fill you in on details more

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics!

Man, I know.. Things have been so busy for me that I feel like I'm working all the time. Feels like I'm doing something WRONG when I sneak out in the garage to play with toys!!

I got the 4Runner about a month ago and I've been tinkering with it-mostly getting it rigged out with lights and gizmos, CB, extra power outlets, etc. It's got way more redneck bling to go, which is one reason I haven't been posting.

Anyway, the chair will be sweet once I get it all together. So far I have the office chair with a welded, removeable rifle rest/light mount. I may re-do that setup for more strength, but as it is it already works.

What's left-if you can visualize this-is a small ladder from the cargo rack part up to the platform that your feet are on for the killin' chair. I'm mainly trying to work out how to make it juuuust small enough to still be safe and comfortable. I'm also trying to keep strength through design in consideration so I can keep it light. I usually tend to overbuild things which is why I want to see what others have done.

Next up will be a roof rack that will be sturdy enough to hold a couple rednecks with guns and lights..hehehehe! That's more in depth and I'm probably gonna have to have a metal shop help me out with fabbing some parts. Unless anybody has a plasma cutter out there?

Edited to add: Maggie, you posted at the same time as me! Thanks for the pics!

Sounds like you have the off-season-yote-predator-callin bug. Hope our pics helped some, rat can explain it further.

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics!

I think Bayourat has access to a plasma cutter. There are some good pics over on that "other" site. I'm gonna go the "axle route" when I build one. Heavy duty but still light weight. I did see a new shooting chair the other day on a commercial on the Outdoor Channel. It looked like it would be perfect for mounting to an existing "rack/floor". It had rail and foot rest already made onto it and rotated 360 degrees.

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics!

Yeah, I've been scouring 'that other site' for awhile. I have a plan pretty much decided, but I'm mainly fishing for some little thing that might be one of those slap the head and say "why didn't I think of that!" ideas..

I'll post pics when I get it done. Things don't happen fast around here nowadays with kid stuff and working all the time.

Maggie those pics do help for the other ideas I'm working on.

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics!

Here's a post I did on 'that other site'.. Gives a better idea of what evil my little pea-brain is concocting!

I got a new toy (4runner) and have been working on the redneck bling aspects of it for about a month. The other day I decided it was time to build a killin' chair JUST for my 'little mule'... Here's where I am so far!

Rack that mounts into hitch....

Nut welded to upgright to eliminate play/rattles...

Mockup:

Front view:

I only get small amounts of time to work on this, and usually it's late at night. Generally I get home and cut whatever steel I know I'll need while it's early-cutting steel in your driveway with a chopsaw is a wee bit loud.. Then I come back out after the baby goes to bed and do my welding. I actually have a complete office chair with light mount and gunbrace already welded, but may not go that way just due to weight. Next up is to drill and weld nuts on the hitch itself (one side, one on top) so I can remove all the play in the rack. It's amazing how a small slop at the receiver translates into several inches of movement 5 feet

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics!

Not sure how you mean? It's not finished yet, which is why the pic with the chair on top is called 'mockup'...LOL! The finished product won't require you to parachute into the chair.

I've actually taken a detour with this project! I mounted a roof rack onto the truck and now am working on a platform for another person. The roof rack isn't big enough to have two people, so the rack I was already working on will still need to be finished, although now I have to figure out a way to tie both together and still allow for easy dissassembly. I'll post pics when I finally get around to working on it again...

What year is the 4runner? mine was an 01 and had a plug in the back. roll that back window down and plug into it. use an adapter to get more plug ins...

you shouldnt need to install more outlets i would think.

looks good man.

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics! Added some of my own..

I'll get some more pics when I get back at it in earnest.. So far I've only managed to put the wire down in the rack. I have the design in my head for the roof rack, and mostly how to hook it up to the upright on the hitchrack. So far I just haven't had much time to mess with it.

Outlet-wise, I will be adding power plugs to the back (none now), but not to use for lights. The spotlight power will all run through regular extension cords the have loop connectors to a marine battery. Eventually I was thinking of adding that battery as a second battery for the 4runner. But that's another distraction I don't need right now!! LOL.. One thing at a time..one thing at a time..

This is what I did to The Beast it works great. The chairs are on two inch pipe that screws into a pipe collar so when you're not hunting out of it you can remove them and it looks like a big luggage rack on top.

SWEET! Lemme know when you need somebody to help out... The pipe collar idea is greatness! Gives me another idea to work with.

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics! Added some of my own..

We used 1 inch square tubing and sandwiched the collar with two pieces of pearling clips. It's rock solid and if you use a pipe wrench to tighten it you don't have to worry about it coming loose till you want it too.
We are currently adding an 8" tall side rail to it, and a light rack for the front for the KC lights.

Re: Killin' chairs-need pics! Added some of my own..

That's got me to thinking about adding an additional few feet of roof rack to my 4runner and just building one big platform. That way the upright tube on my hitchrack could just be a ladder! Not as much engineering to do!
