Black Squirrels
|
|
Years back I used to hunt in the San Saba area. I remember seeing a species of black squirrel that was larger than your normal squirrel. it also had long tufts of black hair off the tips of its ears. I was wondering, Is anybody still seeing these critters. And if so, how big is their range in Texas?

I believe melanistic versions of both fox and gray squirrels are known to turn up occasionally. Not a different species, just a different race.

I have seen them on our hill country lease, they live in the rock walls that were built years ago to keep cattle out of the peanut fields. They seem to be about the size of a big red

I've seen them from Junction to Austin to Belton. Rock squirrels are found throughout the hill country.

Re: Black Squirrels

I also live in East Texas (Tyler County) and we have a lot of black fox squirrels. These are totally different than the rock squirrels found in central Texas.
It is a semi-rare color phase of the normal fox squirrel but apparently is heriditary. In the immediate areas where you find black squirrels, they are very common.....even though uncommon overall.
Question???? Are the rock squirrels in the central part of the state any good to eat? I've been told they were not, but they look like just another squirrel to me......no personal experience with their table fare.

Re: Black Squirrels

I posted a while back asking about a large squirrel that I saw while hunting.. No one could identify what the heck I was talking about. Now that I see this picture of a black squirrel-I would have to say that this is what I saw in the woods that day. I know now that I was not imagining things.
