Decent Corn Prices

FYI - if you live near Denton county or don't mind making the drive - Donald Paddock Feed Store in Krum is selling 50lb bags at a fairly reasonable price:

1 Bag - $7.00
1/2 ton (20 bags) - $6.75
1 ton (40 bags) - $6.50

What sucks though is the corn is in paper bags!! I hate those, but at 6.50 per bag for 1 ton - I'll deal with it.

By the way, they told me they'll be going up in price very shortly.

Re: Decent Corn Prices

I paid 8.50 for a 50 lb bag today. Me and the wife were talking about the price of corn today. I have 3 feeders, and a whole I put corn in for the hogs. I am buying 6 bags of corn a month. That is less than 50 bucks a month, but we don't buy any meat from the store. So there is no way I could buy meat for 50 dollars a month. The price of corn is still way cheaper for me than buying meat at the store. And it is my favorite pass time. Watching all the animals, and killing hogs. And hunting during deer season.

Re: Decent Corn Prices

do yall not have an academy around???? academy always has it for $5.99 or less/40lb bag, tough plastic bags too. thats about $40 more per ton than $6.50/50lb bag special. its $40 per ton cheaper than $8.50/50lb bag though. no tax either.

my father in law gets a discount, so we buy a ton at a time for about $250 which lasts almost a year.

I bought a ton yesterday for 6.95$ per 50#. Local feed store, they told me they were raising prices soon. Last year I was buying from a neighbor/farmer for something like 7$ per 100# you bag.

The feed store had free delivery on any ton of feed since I've been buying from them. I noticed a little sign on the door saying they were charging 20$ per delivery now.

Re: Decent Corn Prices

I buy feed at Burleson Feed Mill by the bulk, not in the bags. Its cheaper.

Whole corn=$14.50 cwt
Soybean Hull/corn glutten (Mix #4)= $12.00 cwt
Alfalfa Pellets= $15.00 cwt

The soybean /corn gluten is a pellet that deer love and provide an excellent source of protein. It works great in typical feeders without clogging anything up.

Right now, corn is $6.75 per bag. If you buy more than 20 bags, $6.60 per bag. I was told by their receptionist, it will go up .50 to .75 per bag on Monday!! Better hurry!!

Deer corn and protein pellets are livestock feed and therefore not taxable. Unless they have recently changed the law and the Comptrollers Office hasn't notified me to start collecting tax on them. If you still have your receipt, take it to them and tell them you want your 6.75% or whatever back or you'll complain to the Comptroller's Office. Not telling ya what to do, but dang prices are high enough. That's money they are keeping and not turning in to the State. JMO

Re: Decent Corn Prices

Am I reading this right? I also paid taxes on my food plot seeds and I think this is saying that as long as it is for wildlife consumption that it is tax exempt without an exemption certificate, same with corn.

Texas Administrative Code
Next Rule>>

TITLE 34 PUBLIC FINANCE
PART 1 COMPTROLLER OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTS
CHAPTER 3 TAX ADMINISTRATION
SUBCHAPTER O STATE SALES AND USE TAX
RULE §3.296 Agriculture, Animal Life, Feed, Seed, Plants, and Fertilizer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(a) Sales tax is not due on the receipts from sales of, and the storage, use or consumption of, the following:

(1) Horses, mules, work animals, and any form of animal life of a kind the products of which ordinarily constitute food for human consumption.

(A) Sales tax is not due on the sale, lease, or rental of horses and mules except when sold, leased, or rented as a part of an amusement service.

(B) The term "work animals" shall include any animal exclusively used in the following:

(i) The production of food for human consumption or other agricultural products held for sale in the regular course of business. Examples: plow animals or sheep dogs.

(ii) The aiding of handicapped individuals or the performance of protective services, providing that the animal has been professionally trained for that specific purpose.

(C) "Work animals" shall not include animals raised, trained, or held as pets or for sport or show.

(D) Exemption certificates are not required on sale of horses, mules, or any form of animal life of a kind, the products of which ordinarily constitute food for human consumption. Sales tax is due on the sale of all other animals unless the purchaser provides a valid and properly completed resale or exemption certificate.

(2) Hay, corn, oats, and any other type of feed normally consumed by farm and ranch animals, animals that are held for sale in the regular course of business, and wildlife.

(A) Included in this section is feed for animals covered by paragraph (1) of this subsection, feed for animals held for breeding purposes whose offspring are held for sale in the regular course of business, and wildlife. Examples of feed purchased for wildlife include deer corn and perishable bait used for commercial, sport and recreational fishing. Feed purchased for an animal that might normally be kept as a pet is taxable. Pets normally include, but are not limited to, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and tropical fish.

(B) All persons selling the type of feed that is normally consumed by farm and ranch animals or wildlife may sell the feed tax free without an exemption certificate. Persons selling food for an animal that might normally be kept as a pet should collect sales tax or accept a valid and properly completed resale or exemption certificate from the purchaser.

(3) Seeds and annual plants, the products of which ordinarily constitute food for human consumption, are used to produce feed for animals exempted by this section, or are to be sold in the regular course of business. An exemption certificate is not required when purchasing these items.

(4) Fertilizers, fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, defoliants, and desiccants exclusively used or employed on farms or ranches in the production of food for human consumption, feed for any form of animal life, or other agricultural products to be sold in the regular course of business. However, when these particular items are used in commercial storage facilities or other storage facilities that are not operated exclusively by the owner or are not located on the farm or ranch, the exemption is lost and the tax must be remitted on the sales price of the items. Fertilizer is taxable if sold for use on lawns, home gardens, or for any uses other than those listed in this paragraph. See subsection (d) of this section regarding exemption certificates.

Re: Decent Corn Prices

I guess a lot of people don't know they don't have to pay taxes on livestock feed. 2 A & B above apply and for food plot seeds 3 applies.

Even though the state is calling wildlife livestock here you will have to pay tax on tripods, stands, solar panels etc. I think that is all listed as sporting goods or recreational goods.

I hope this helps others too.

Gonna cut back on the length of feeding times on my timers. Just enough to keep the animals in the area. Also, I probably won't start filling my feeders until late August of early September. With the high cost of gasoline and the high cost of corn, I don't intend to be running down to the deer lease every week or two to fill feeders.
