muzzy phantoms... pieces of #@$%

i was in san antonio the other day, and decided to stop in bass pro to buy some broadheads. i have been using expandables for the past 2 years, but after having a RAGE malfunction last year, i decided to try some fixed blade.

bought the muzzy phantoms and shot them this weekend for a test. they flew like CRAP. i'm dialed in on my field points... i shoot my first broadhead, and 6 inches down, 3 to left. next broadhead, six inches left, about 8 inches high. third went 2 inches right, 4 inches down. this was all at 20 yds.

i'm putting 4 arrows in a 2 1/2 inch group at this distance... i'm not a pro, but man, these broadheads fly WEIRD.

so i give them to my buddy to shoot. he's an AVID muzzy mx4 fan, and tried mine out in his back yard. completely missed his block at 25 yds. i watched his arrow when he shot them, and man, the arrow just flys WEIRD. that's all i can say. the only way i can describe it is that the arrow is bouncing through the air, up and down, all over the place. it's wicked to see, for sure.

anyone have any good fixed blades that shoot consistent at least?

We have some phantoms and they shoot great. Great penetration as well. I wonder if you got a bad batch or something or your bow may not be tuned properly. I have shot all kinds of Muzzy's for years without problems. Good luck finding what works for you.

I've been using the Muzzy 3 blade 125's and they fly like field points. I've thought about trying those Shuttle T locs though. They really advertise them alot, I wonder if they really fly that good?

Expand your horizons. It is almost impossible to beat the Wenzel Woodsman. It is point #1 on the attached link (scroll down a little). They make screw-in models and they can be sharpened in seconds with a file, a diamond hone, or even a flat rock if necessary.

I have a few of them, haven't shot any animals yet. I still depend on my Muzzy's. They seem to fly well though, I still have problems changing from something that works. The old addage, if it works don't fix it.

Ditto...Lost a buck last season..thought I had them tuned in .. had to adjust my sights for them....6 inches down and about 4 inches to the left...shooting a 2 inch group at 20 yards...but my stand is set at only 13 yds.... so thought I would have no problem....well...I hit that buck about 8 inches to the left and 4 inches down....gut shot..tracked him for about a mile and blood pettered out.and this was after waiting 7 hours before tracking...still feel bad that he had to die a slow and painfull death by my hand...could have been just a bad shot on my part...but I lost all confidence in those broadheads.. I still use muzzy mx when hog hunting.. but for whitetail I stick to G5 Montecs or Slick Tricks..

Re: muzzy phantoms... pieces of #@$%

A properly tuned bow will shoot ANY broadhead accurately. Dialed in with field tips isn't saying a darn thing, to be blunt about it. Broadheads will expose a bow that's out of tune. That's why the Easton tuning guide covers broadhead tuning. Shoot field tips. Shoot broadheads. Make adjustments to bring the two groups together a little at a time. Before you know it, any broadhead you pick up will fly like your field tips. You can shoot a dozen different broadheads to find one that MIGHT fly just like your field tips, and 99% of the time mechanicals will fly just like a field tip. Guys that don't want to or know how to tune a bow resort to them for that very reason. You can't just throw any fixed blade head on and say they fly like crap if your bow isn't fine tuned. Bottom line.

Practice from elevation, as well. You will typically hit high when shooting from a tree stand. Just something you have to figure out with time or practice. When I started aiming lower from an elevated position, I stopped missing or hitting high.

For the record...I swear by SlickTricks but have shot them side by side with Montec G5, Wasp JakHammer (mechanical) and field tips with all hitting dead on. Tune your bow!

Re: muzzy phantoms... pieces of #@$%

saltfork, you may be right... i don't know everything about tuning bows... i usually just bring it to the local shop, and they tune it WITH me, FOR me... they have me shoot, and they do all the adjusting. i just got into bow hunting last year, and i'm sure there's a lot i need to learn...
but i showed the guys at the shop, and they shot it as well... it was really strange.

anyways, i boughy some Montec g5's today. shot them and they're right on. so i'm good to go for saturday
