Heres one of my new feeders i just finished

The leg adaptors are cast aluminum, a little expensive, but the last feeder i built ten years ago had them on it, and i just had to put a new barrel on it. Got them at Russel Feed. Everything else, the timer, funnel, lid, all Cabellas. Paint job looks a little too extravegant for most people, but i do it more to hide them from people than animals. Ive got about $150 invested in it, but It will last for many seasons. Sk

Nice, put a spincast motor on it and you will be good to go!

I'd watch out for wasps under the overlap. I went to refill last year and had a couple of hundred trying to stay warm in the gap. Love the paint job.

Re: Heres one of my new feeders i just finished

I actually had the same thought about wasps as soon as i backed up and looked at that overhang on the lid. I didnt pay attention to the top of the barrel, or the hight of the barrel when i bought it. Its tall and slender, not short and fat like a normal 55 gallon barrel, and has a taper at the mouth like a beer can. Itll do. Oh yah, dont make fun of the timer, the leg adaptors cost more than i thought they would and i ran out of money. That paint job is easy, just paint it a dark color overall, then get a stick and hold it against the barrel and walk around it as you shoot it with a lighter color. The overspray hits the dark color and silouets the stick. Works good with leaves too. Sk

Russell Feed and Supply in Azle, 817-444-8815. Fair warning, they are $45. The legs are another $45 unless you can find three 1 1/2 poles to use. There is another Russell Feed in Lake Worth if its closer. Skinner

Looks good, I am making a protein feeder this weekend, and found these leg brackets. Actually my wife found them at a hunting expo in Crockett. She paid around 30 bucks for it.

Those are good leg brackets. I use 4, with 2 legs close together and add rungs for a ladder. And it becomes more stable so hogs and/or wind doesn't blow it over as easy. Looks great.

Sorry for the hijack Skinner

tensix,

paint the barrel a base color (OD green), pick/grab some surrounding brush/limbs/leaves, spray paint 2-5 different cans of paint using the brush/leaves as a silhouette.

Its actually easy. Start out with a dark color or a combo of a few dark colors, then pick up a stick out of your yard and hold it up to the barrel and shoot it with a color lighter than the base coat. When you remove the stick you have a perfect imprint of the stick. Do that all over the barrel, then come back with a dark color and do it again over the light paint. I go back and forth a few times until it ballances out. Use sticks that have twigs branching off in both directions, but that will lay flat against the meatal. Also use the edge of oak leaves or for South Texas spray a barrel green, and yellow, then come back with OD Green, and use a mesquite branch as a template with leaves still atatched. Turns out pretty dang cool. Skinner

I like the leg brackets, and $45 is not bad! IMy bro-in-law had some on a feeder and they are very durable.
I'll be headed to Lake Worth to get some soon!

Thanks for posting this. I went to Russel feed and picked up the leg brackets for my new feeder and they are stout.I bought some 1 1/4 inch pipe and it works great for the legs. I had been looking for a long time.
