Feed time

In the corn price thread I see a lot of folks talking about minimum feed times. What is minimum to you?
I just set up my first feeder last weekend. I have a Cabela's feeder with a Cabela's timer. I have the motor set on Med and 3 sec. Will this be putting out a lot of corn?
Also, my plate is about 1/4" for the funnel. Is this too far/close?

Sounds about right if you are feeding twice a day. Best thing is to do several test "runs" and see how the corn will disperse out. If no corn continues to trickle out after each run, then you know your setting is OK.
As for time.... everyone has their own theory, but during the summer, I prefer once in the morning with a run of about 4 seconds. Later, around the 1st of October, I will switch to twice a day, and a 3 second feeding cycle; the 2nd feeding time in the late afternoon.
AND.....
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME! Last I heard...DEER DO NOT HAVE WATCHES!

I set mine to feed at 5:30 in the afternoon. Is it better to do mornings in the summer? I figure I will feed once a day until around the 1st of Sept and then I will do it twice a day since archery starts at the end of Sept.

put a camera on your feeder and see what the deer do.
ours are set for 3 seconds now because everything is so green. Good luck

I would like to put up a camera, but I have bought a lot of toys lately and it is not in my budget right now.....but I might find a way to get it anyways...

I would feed just mornings so that your deer dont become as nocturnal. Crank it up to twice a day in Sept on low. It is just something you have to toy with. They are going to eat natural grasses first most of the time.
One gay thing you can do if you are worried about the amount of corn throwing is let it throw into a trash sack and then weigh it. Good luck

Have timers set for 2 seconds once a day during spring/summer, depending on location usually in morning. Cameras show pigs and deer showing up at all hours. During spring/summer deer "browse" thur feeder areas and dont clean up all the corn.

I have mine set to go off at 8pm for around 5 seconds with the funnel close to the spinner, throws it out far and makes lots of noise but doesnt throw out a huge amount of corn.
I am getting deer at my stand from about 7:30 until after dark.
I am mainly hunting hogs at the moment so I only feed in the afternoons.

Why is that Gay? We do this all the time. It lets us know how long to expect our feeders to throw before becoming empty. Yeah, trial and error will tell us the same thing. But if someone is setting up a new feeder right now, and it lasts a couple of months, that's getting into Sept. w/o knowing how long it will feed before running out of feed.

Before we lost our lease, I fed about average in September (5 seconds both am & pm). Increased in October to 7 seconds and really cranked it up in November and December. Heavy is 8 seconds each @ 6:45am / 8:00am / 4:00pm & 5:oopm. Figured I wanted to see max deer and it was very effective for my stand. I'd probally reconsider at the cost of corn the days....

We all turned our feeders way back and put remotes on them for when we are hunting. Only feeding twice a day for a few seconds then use the remotes when you get bored.

Try finding some pellets, sometimes it;s cheaper. Betterfor the deer. Deer won't need corn(carbs) until the velvet drops

Good question....I have mine set on med. for 4 sec, morning and evening. I pump it up to 6 seconds in the fall
