Want to build a box blind

I want to build a box blind for deer hunting and am looking for any ideas you might have. I'm not a builder by any stetch of the word but I am pretty good at following directions from plans etc...

Any ideas where to start?

Re: Want to build a box blind

Do you want it off the ground a certain height? If so look for some solid leg braces. I use the metal racks like you see in Warehouse stores that are 6-10 feet high. Build my box say 6x6 and put a leg brace in alternating corners. Bolt the legs to the stand with LONG lag bolts. Make sure the floor has plenty of support. I use 2x6 or 2x8 or ect.... because that is the only thing that will keep you off the ground. Over the top of the floor supports I use a black mat for horse stalls so I never have to deal with carpet.
Here are my dimensions for the last stand built:

6 ft wide square ( 6x6x6x6), 7ft high roof sloping to 6'6" on one side AWAY from the door. Framed in 2x4 in all 4 corners with 2 cross braced 2x4 running the lenght of the side wall. Use the cuts from the corner 2x4 to act as vertical braces within the wall. I cover the entire box in tin ( old barn tin or a dull color) and then insulate it on the inside. I attach the insalation with liquid nails and use the stuff that house builds use before they brick the house. it comes in 4x8 sheets and I cut it to fit.

I hope this is what you were looking for. I do suggest that you sit down and draw you some plans first and be very detailed so you do not get lost while you are building.

If it sounds complicated it really is not just get started.

booger - where can you get the warehouse shelves? are they expensive?

i uses 2x2's in place of the heavier 2x4's

Re: Want to build a box blind

I will go to the stories and talk to the managers or find some of the warehouse factories and talk to them. Both places don't want to use any of them if they are bent so those are the ones I use.

I agree you can use the 2x2 but it just is something else to buy. I have also used house windows and just framed them in as well. I get those at the salvage warehouse placed for $25 or so.

I have 2 of these and they are nice. They come with everything except the 4 peices of 1/2 plywood.

The legs are fairly light steel, but plenty strong. The windows are kind of small about 2 feet wide by about a foot tall. The floor of the blind it 10 feet high, and it is very stable, and comfortable. You will need to buy a seat of some kind for it, I don't think any blinds come with seats. I used a pedestal for a boat seat, and mounted the most comfortable boat seat I could find. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

Your welcome, looking forward to meeting up with you and tres and drinking a few beers.

By myself I did it in one day. And I am not the best carpenter. Once you cut the wood out it is just bolting it together and painting it, then stand it up. I built it by my house and used my tractor to carry it to my food plot. Standing it up with just me and my wife was a bit tricky, but we managed to do it without tearing it up.

I recently ordered some plans from hutingblindplans dot com and they are great. For $20 you get plans for a 4x4, 4x6 and two waterfowl plans. They give you materials lists and dimensions of wood. I just dropped that off a Lowe's and they cut it all one day and I picked it up the next. I am going to start building this evening.

Check that. These plans are not that great. The measurements are off because the plan designer thinks a 2 x 4 is actually 2 x 4. I have to make major modifications to the plans to get them to work right. If I get everything worked out and anyone is interested, I may re-do the plans so that actually have some use.

YA, luckily I did not make many cuts before realizing the issue. I used pressure treated lumber so it was a bit expensive.

I have one of these. It's a great stand; extremely sturdy after you add in some angle braces of your own. Another note....it's HEAVY and a real pain in the arse to set upright. There were three of us and it almost killed us getting up in the air.

Here are a couple pics of the strongbuilt kit blind. If you look at the second pic you can see the paint is gone on the edges, that is from the front end loader of my tractor. Me and my wife set it up by ourselves. It wasn't easy, but if she was better driving the tractor it would have been a lot easier.

Re: Want to build a box blind

That's funny, sort of. Hate that you had them cut all of the wood for wrong plans! Treated wood adds weight too.
The first blind I built I used treated 4X4's for legs and treated 2X4's for the rest of the framing. I moved it twice then donated it to a landowner so I'd never have to move it again. That thing weighed a ton and was only 4X4X6 and 4' or so off of the ground. Never again, I try to go the lighter route now and they still come out heavy!

Sorry, I didn't see this post until now. I have carpet lining the entire inside, and have boat type seat in it. The ceiling is flat, but is covered by sheetmetal that comes in the kit. It is 3 peices of sheetmetal. One for each side, and they touch in the middle, and one fairly wide sheet to cover where the other to meet. It hasn't leaked at all since I put it up. I need to put some shelves in it, but haven't done so yet.

Re: Want to build a box blind

tgil,

Luckily yjr cut list included some excess on each board so I did not have to buy any more wood. It was just the cuts I made on the first board that were wrong. None too happy about it, but I got it figured out.

The pressure treated lumber is very heavy, but the good thing about the blind is that if I need to move it it comes apart and will fit in the bed of a pickup.

Looks good. However, I would paint it even though you used the pressure treated plywood. Also, I would install some rain guards over the windows to help shed the water away from the railings.

Re: Want to build a box blind

I plan on painting it, but the wood was still wet from the pressure treatments so I wanted it to dry out first. I also have guards to go over the windows and the rails on the windows have holes in the bottom to allow water to drain out if necessary (you know those sideways rains we get sometimes).

I do not plan to elevate it at this time because it is not necessary in the position it is in. Most of the trees around a either browsed up pretty high or shorter than the window. If I relocate it at a later date I would consider elevating.

I am building 2 blinds this week. If you have a moving companies in or around your city, buy the crates, made out of plywood. We had 3(2 burned) and they worked out great. I think Trent paid 20 dollars per crate. Just cut your windows and door, paint ect. You can customize them as much as you want. They may be a little banged up, but not to bad. The ones we have are 4X8X6 and easily accomadated 3 adults, comfortably.
