I have a one year old Brittany that I'd like to run on some birds a few times before taking her out for the real deal next season. So, I have a few questions.
Does anyone know where around Dallas (I'm in Plano) to find pen raised quail?
Any recommendations for a 15 month old Brittany that has only tasted quail on the end of fishing line and pointed/flushed killdeer, doves, and robins? Should I start off with having her find a pen full of birds first then move up to releasing a few at a time?
In Texas, can you shoot pen raised quail any time of year (outside of the season) like you can in Georgia? If I'm gonna buy 'em and release 'em, I'd also like to grill 'em...

you can shoot the pen raised year round in texas also.
The dog needs a good intro at first, what I do is have the dog on a checkcord and hold the bird in my hand and wiggle it around get the dog fired up and then let go and let it fly off. Hold the checkcord while the bird is flying off and let pup chase and just stop her at the end of the cord. If she does not chase the first time just repeat until she does. Then you can start letting one wing flap so that she can see it wont hurt her and do the same thing and let the bird go.
You have to be careful with the pen raised birds, those are sometimes easy for the dogs to catch and that is not what you want, you want to dog to think that they can’t catch the bird, that’s what brings out the pointing instinct. If you can get pigeons it will be a lot cheaper and they fly better and won’t get caught.
It’s a slow process, and she is at the right age to really get started. Look into the Perfection Kennels DVD’s, kinda pricey but worth every penny.

The only place I know of is in Stephenville. Calvin Hudson owns Box-H game birds. I have contacted my professor to get his contact information. Another man is waiting on it too.

I was told by the TP&W that it is only legal to shoot pen raised birds out of season if the land you are on is declared a bird hunting preserve (which means you pay a yearly fee) try the flying p I think the website is www.flyingp.com or something like that just google it. havent been in years but it was a nice place. trained my 1st brittany there 12-14 years ago. nice people.

The LBJ Grasslands (public land) north of Decatur used to have a place about two miles east of the Archery range that was marked properly and you could work dogs there. Might call the ranger office there and ask

It's $80 per year, from sept 1 to aug 31. Signs must be posted on the property declaring it a private bird hunting area and the birds must be banded.

I really can't reccommend them more. I have a 4 year old Weim that I entrusted to a "trainer", I took his advice and it just didn't feel right to me. But, she is my 1st dog so a trusted the advice. Needless to say, I thought the dog, who had a lot of potential, was ruined...too many bad habits. With-in two days, John and Cindy and I had her standing staunch while birds were released within 10 feet. John agreed that there is a lot of work to do, but that we could train through her problems. Hopefully we can get her FC this coming season.
Their philosophy is, no gimmicks, common sense, work hard, have fun. Their process confirmed what I thought I should have done, and will do with an upcoming pup.
