Range Finder

I just got into hunting, and I do not trust my eyes when it comes to distance calculation. I would like to get a range finder, but wanted to know if anyone knew of a decent one that is not too expensive.

I seriously thinking about buying one myself. This past weekend I helped some guys look for a deer that one of them had shot, reportedly at a distance of 165 yards. It looked a lot more like 265 yards to me, stretching the limits of the .243 the guy was using. I often shoot a .243 myself. But at that distance, I would have taken my .270 instead.

Never did find the deer after tracking a weak blood trial for at least a half mile.

I, and I'm sure others, would definitely appreciate a "primer" on these devices and what to look for when purchasing one.

go to cabelas website and check out their rangefinders. you can read reviews and find out what problems are consistent. that way you know what will work for you. and before anyone suggests it, you dont need a leica...

I have been looking on cabelas as suggested, and it looks like the Nikon 550 prostaff is the one. I plan to use it to Bow hunt as well, but the prostaff looks liek it beats the Nickon Archers choice in distance. We will see what happens. Just looking for the cheapest deal now.

yeah i live about 30 min away from cabelas so i pretty much live there. i wanted one for the same things you do. i dont currently bow hunt but you never know. that archers choice seems to be a good idea, it might be worth your while to check it out if you are close enough. i looked at a ton of them when i chose mine. i got the 800, just because it was on sale. im happy with it. its just like the 550 just more distance. they are easy as hell to use, very simple
