How about Clifton? Anyone been there or have any opinions about the town?
It is near Meridian and Lake Whitney SPs and is at the "top of the hill country"(to steal Meridian's motto). It has a city park on the Bosque River and has museums.
Looking for any information from someone who has "been there done that".
Thanks.
I am looking for a small town in which to spend 2-3 days with the family to get away from things and slow down.
I would like to find some place with a small family owned motel where we could basically have the pool to ourselves, some good home cooking cafes and maybe a local museum or city park on a river or close to a fishing lake, state park or wildlife area.
Just someplace where things are a little slower and we can catch our breath before school starts and things get back to "normal" i.e. fast paced and hectic.
Know any small towns that fit this description?
Preferably within 200 miles of Tyler.
Thanks in advance.

You are right. The Hill Country is our favorite, but we have spent the last 5 years going to the Hill Country and have stayed in Llano,Marble Falls, Burnet and Fredericksburg.
This year we are short on time and looking for somewhere closer and something different.
Any suggestions on the area northwest of Fort Worth?

I grew up in West amd spent many days in Clifton. They put on a great rodeo every year. Clifton is a nice town. It is a pretty good drive to Whitney(20-30miles) and it is not all that far form Meridian. If I were you, I would go to Meridian. The state park there is great. We used to go there when I was a kid. There are plenty of hiking trails and the fishing was descent. Meridian is a small town with a small town mentality.
Then again, if you are looking for NW of Ft Worth, try out Possum kingdom. That lake is beautiful and they have a rather nice state park as well. There is plenty to see and do around the lake, you just might not get the small town feel as it is a popular lake. I am going up there with the family next weekend and I am really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been to Meridian but never spent more than an hour or two. That is the main reason I thought of Clifton.
I also have considered Mineral Wells not only for the small town atmosphere and PK but Mineral Wells SP also.
I just got back from a 425 mile one day round trip to Houston, so I am really in need of a small town.
Thanks.

Definitely Wimberly! Stayed there several times on vacation. My father in law just bought a house there a few months ago. Beautiful and relaxing!

We have visited Fredericksburg(though not stayed there) for the last five years and been to Wimberly a couple of times but never stayed there either.
We have decided to give the hill country a rest this year and were looking a little closer to home and in a different direction.
I expect we'll head back to the hill country next year or so and we'll give Wimberly another look for sure.
Fredericksburg will definitely get another visit, if just to go to the Museum of the Pacific for a third time.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

I have lots of family in Clifton and I hunt outside of there each year. Lake Whitney and Lake Aquilla are both 20-30 minutes away. It is a nice little town. Most of the downtown area is devoted to antique shopping. As said earlier, Meridian has a nice state park. If you are into wine, the Red Caboose Winery is in Meridian and is a pretty cool place with some nice wine. Clifton also has a new motel on Hwy 6. I think it is a Best Western, but it may be a Holiday Inn Express.

Thanks for the information. The Best Western looks fairly new from the pictures on the website
My wife and daughter would enjoy the shopping and I know my son and I would like Meridian SP. I've never been to Lake Aquilla, so I may have to check it out.
I always enjoy checking out Texas wineries, so thanks for the tips.

Glen Rose and Dinosaur Valley state park are not really that far away from the Clifton/Meridian area, and are pretty neat to visit.
There is the Fossil Rim drive thru Game Park outside of Glen Rose that is a pretty good place to visit also.

CH, Thanks for the ideas.
We have been to Dinosaur Valley SP but didn't spend any time in Glen Rose.
Never been to Fossil Rim but heard a lot of good things about it.
