Limit catfish, spotted seatrout from Galveston Bay AUSTIN — Fans of catfish and spotted seatrout caught in Galveston Bay are being advised to limit their consumption of the two species.
The advisory came Tuesday from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
DSHS says a two-year study found elevated levels of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyl's, or PCBs, in catfish and spotted seatrout.
The advisory includes Chocolate Bay, East Bay, West Bay, Trinity Bay and contiguous waters.
The health agency says adults are advised to limit consumption of the two types of fish to no more than one 8-ounce meal per month.
Women who are nursing, pregnant or who may become pregnant and children should not eat catfish or spotted seatrout from Galveston Bay.
Spotted seatrout are also known as speckled trout. I found this in the Lufkin Daily News Paper from Lufkin, Texas

I saw that earlier somewhere else.
We are going to be lucky if there are not more bans and warnings concerning the consumption of both fresh and salt water fish.
There is already a warning or ban concerning fish and shell fish from Lavaca Bay.
I imagine they will be or are testing the bay complex around Corpus and probably the Lower Laguna Madre.
There has been so much washed and dumped into our river and bay system over the years, that such bans or warnings may be issued all along the coast.

Hardheads/Gafftops, and in the upper ends of the bays where the rivers dump in channel and blue catfish.

yep this sucks - only catch and release for now on. why doesn't this affect flounder and redfish? this is a huge burdon - fishing is so expensive now a days and you can't even eat what you spend all that money on. the trout population should blow up now. there has always been a ban in the upper galveston bay area, but now the whole bay. i figured it was a matter of time. sounds like golf is back on again.

Well I got an email yesterday regarding it! July 8, 2008, 1:32PM Texas issues health warning on some Galveston Bay fish

State health officials today warned consumers to sharply limit consumption of spotted seatrout and catfish caught in Galveston Bay because of high levels of cancer-causing chemicals found in their flesh.
The warning, which calls for limiting consumption to no more than one eight-ounce serving of the fish per month, extends fish advisories that have been in place for the Houston Ship Channel and northern portions of the bay since 1990.
Children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and nursing mothers should not eat the fish.
Contaminants do not pose a threat to swimmers.
The Texas Department of State Health Services said a two-year study showed elevated levels of dioxins and polychlorinated byphenyls in the fish. Affected areas include Chocolate Bay , East Bay , West Bay , Trinity Bay and surrounding waters.
Dioxins are produced as unintentional by-products of many chemical and industrial processes and from incomplete combustion. Polychlorinated biphenyls were commonly used as coolants and lubricants in electrical equipment until banned in 1979.
Both chemicals degrade slowly in the environment.
Health officials said long-term PCB consumption may cause cancer or reproductive, immune system, developmental or liver problems. Dioxins have been linked to reproductive damage and an increased risk of cancer.
Both catfish and the trout, also known as speckled trout, are popular among sport fishermen.
Red drum, black drum, flounder and other fish were sampled and found safe to eat. But if you read this article it says these toxins were banned almost 30 yrs ago and now say something???
Well I fish in East Bay almost every weekend and eat the trout all the time! Its not going to slow me down. JMHO
