Well sir.... you're too late for '08! New Mexico operates with a lottery draw which is held in June, your applications must be submitted in April! There is a possibility that you could find a landowner's tag, but they are usually very expensive.

Without going into too much detail, NM is divided into hunt units. Tags are allocated for each unit. The better areas usually have a high number of applicants; those areas are usually centered around the national forests, such as the Gila National Forest.

Try this link to the NM Game & Fish, and you will be able to gain much of the info you will need....

You may also decide to go with an outfitter. Decide on the area you want to try to hunt, what type of weapon, and contact some of the outfitters in those areas. Expect to pay from $2500 and up!

If you have an extra $12000 laying around you can go to Vermejo Park and get a good one.

Non-resident elk license is $526.00 sold OTC in Colorado.

If you are looking for a guided hunt or some free advice for a DIY elk hunt give me a call or PM me!

Thanks for the help...I guess Colorado might be the place to go

Hornaddiction...I might take you up on some of that free advise

It will be next year before I think I would be able to go but just have been really interested for some time.

I was up around Cloudcroft all last week and seeing a few big bulls on my drive to Ruidoso from there really got my heart pumping.
