duck hunting near Nacogdoches?
      #425113 - 05/15/08 07:24 PM

hey guys,

i'm moving to nac for school from nebraska, and was wondering if there was enough hunting within an hour or two to warrant bringing down a bag or two of dekes. i'm more of a small water, hide in the weeds kind of guy. any help would be appreciated.

Tons of wood ducks in the area. Not much need for dekes for those. I am sure the bigger bodies of water have some gads and mallards.

I would say yes, you can pretty much find ducks on all bodies of water in Texas. If I were you, I would bring your duck hunting gear, get on Google, draw a 60 mile circle around Nac, identify all the bodies of water, call the lake office of each, and find out what the hunting regs are, hunting maps, hunting permits needed, etc…

The TPWD website is a good place to start, see link below, click on lake, look for “Reservoir Controlling Authority” to get the number of the lake office, talking to a park ranger is not a bad idea either, don’t expect folks to post up there honey holes on here, most keep that tight to the vest. I’m sure you will meet a lot of duck hunting buds at school, good luck, and welcome to the forum.

There is a ton of great duck hunting in that area.

thanks guys. i'm not looking for people to tell me where, when, how to hunt. i can do my own footwork. just didn't want to truck a bunch of gear down just to find out the entire migration is 10 hours away. i assume the hunting will be a little different in eastern texas than what i'm used to up here in nebraska, hunting potholes and open river channels.

Yes, it will be different. You'll be hunting a lot of sloughs and cypress breaks, plus a great deal of flooded timber. Even the "open water" hunting in that neck of the woods tends toward flooded cypress and dead timber. It's very swampy.

If you've always been in Nebraska, be forewarned that the area around Nac is LOADED with snakes and gators aren't too hard to find. Bear that in mind if you're going to be putting a dog in the water.

Otherwise, deep East Texas is a wonderful place. The people are cool and laid back, the beer's cold, the food's great and the duck hunting can be excellent. Welcome to Texas.

Just don't ask him what he plans to do with that pineapple after you get to the blind.

Went to college in Nac myself and killed LOTS of ducks the 4.5 years I was there. There are many spots you can go hunt and be back at class by 9am. I had lots of mornings where I drove into the parking lot and was shucking waders off and grabbing books at the same time. Good luck and welcome to East Texas.
