I Need Help With Exotics
      #429829 - 05/23/08 11:55 AM

I am looking to buy some exotics for my place but have no clew where to start. Place is low fenced but has huge bordering canyons and is a decent sized place but is in arrid country (only 9-10 inches of rain a year). What am I looking at costs per animal for a dozen blackbucks? and where do I buy them and do I need a license etc. Any help would be great. Thanks

What area you talking about.Sounds like you may be limited to Auodad but dont plan on a canyon or two holding them in.

A low fence should hold them(Blackbucks) and if you have a constant water source, you should be fine. Not sure where you are but give Terry Caffey a call. He should be able to point you in the right direction and answer any questions you might have. Also PM Curtis here on the forum. Terry Caffey 325-456-1131

Terry is a great guy. He helped me set up my operation years ago and been going strong since.

If your in Texas, no you dont need a license to put blackbucks or many other exotics on your place. But from what it sounds like you may need to put out additional mineral supplement for them and it needs to be near your water source. We still have a few in our breeder pen for sale and can help you out with some suggestions and service.

At your convenience give me a call at 830-263-1139 or pm me a phone number to reach you at.

One question/comment, what is the Coyote/Bobcat/Mountain Lion population like on this property?????

From what I have heard thru discussions with people that have tried it, Black buck are about like sheep when it comes to being preyed on by coyotes, they will just stand there waiting to die.

I'd have to disagree with you a bit there about them being as stupid as sheep. I have never seen a blackbuck not run from a coyote or bobcat. I have seen common domestic sheep stand there and get attacked as they are grouped up. But that is not the characteristic of a blackbuck to do that at all. We have seen a few coyotes get in our front pasture over the past few years and they can pick up on predators pretty well from what I observe.

The young usually will not move until you are almost upon them as they hide in the tall grass. They definetly have a comfort zone that that they like something to appear at before considering a threat. Even when we ride thru the pasture they dont' run until you get within 100 yards or so.

Blackbuck does commonly do an alarm jump when they spot something unusual. Usually that is all it takes is for that to happen and its all over and its a quick nose snort and a 45 mph + burst of speed to the nearest brush line.

And if that is the case, there are other exotics that do very well with the blackbuck and can more easily scare off coyotes.

If you do have a predator problem, you need to take care of it before putting exotics out there. But you may not even have a suitable habitat to hold exotics so its hard for me to really say much more until you give me a call or give more detail on your situation. A few exotics will do good in dry areas. Some need more care.

Blackbucks do best where there is optimum grazing pastures.

i would think blackbucks would be a bad choice. they are very suseptable to cold weather, and they need quite a bit of grass. i would think a herd of auodad, mouflon or corsicans would do alot better than blackbuck antelope

Most of the time when I am seeing people having problems with exotics like the African game animals or blackbucks in cold weather is usually because of the feed they are feeding the animals. You may need to switch to a different feed and put out fresh hay for them during the winter months and it really helps out. Mineral will also help with that a lot. If you have adequate shelter and place for them to get out of the wind then they should do find. you need low brush cover and a lot of it block wind.I have some clients up near Brownwood and about 30 miles north of Abilene that do not have any problems with raising them there in the winter months. Molasses and alfalfa hay helps a lot. They have more of a dry cold weather up there which is not so bad. Down here where I live we have a higher humidity and the cold can do more damage to exotics it seems IF you dont know what you are doing. During 2006 when we had that terrible ice storm, we only lost 2 blackbuck does out of over 180 that we have on our property. The other 3 ranches that I hunt on and guide on only lost 4 total. Other exotics such as the zebra and Scimitar Oryx were not harmed at all. Temperatures during that time were down to as low as 23 deg F for about 3 days and we had a lot of freezing rain.

Some places I have seen that loose animals in winter have it over stocked possibly and usually have like a 6' browse line. There is no low brush cover. They have shade for summer months maybe, but with no low brush cover or obstacle to block cold wind or some kind of natural cover, they are going to die. Not every place I have seen has this and thats when I have seen problems.

when we hunted in mexico the place that boarded are's was a real wealthy family and the grandfather had brought in just about every specie's of exotic their was at the time. the game fence's on the interior of the place deteriorated over time and they made their way over to are place. the oryx and nalgai did quite well. even though me nor my dad knew what we were looking at when we first ran across them. the rancher said their were black buck, rhino's,giraffe, and just about anything you can think of at one time or another but were killed out over the years. i don't know if they were unable to breed, overhunted,or the elements killed them off. but i never saw anything other than the nalgai and oryx. and they oryx were world class but they were hard to hunt.and don't get in a standoff with one ,from what i've read on them they are some fierce fighters especially during their rut.

That was probably Gemsbok or Scimitar Oryx you are talking about but I'm betting it was gemsbok with your mention of the aggressiveness. Either of these will survive very well in desert conditions. Do even better in areas like where I am at in Gonzales County.

Curtis, these were the dark tan with black and white in the face. and were about the size of a horse. we saw a pair of them with about 48" horns, and from what i gathered they were a male and female, one was a little bit smaller body. i wanted to shoot one with my .243,but neither one of us was sure what the heck they were at the time. i got back and read up on them, and found they were some mean critters, and all i would of probably done was piss em' off and had to run for are live's. but they were beautiful animals and we never got close to one again over five years. are close encounter with the pair we saw was no further than 30 or so yards on foot.

gonzales is good country, we had a family ranch in wilson county for years. and we ran a lot of cattle through the auction barn in gonzales over the years.

The only thing I know that looks like a longhorn and would get you confused with that is a watusi.

what i was trying to say is i could never remember wich one was wich. i remember that one had a hide similar to a longhorn in it's color orange and white and that must be the scimitar. i've only seen those at game ranches here in texas and the zoo. the only gemsbok i've ever seen is in mexico and on tv.

the watusi ain't those the people with the bone's in their nose's.

appreciate the info.

LOL! I don't know. From the name like that if anyone didn't know any better it could be some kind of a African cricket or grasshopper that Roy is selling hunts for.

lol, yeah i really wanted to go on his chupa hunt. what is the watusi, because the only version i know of i believe is a tribe or it is a dance of some african tribe or religion. is their an actual animal.

but ever since i encountered that big ol' oryx (gemsbok) i've been wanting to take one. one of these day's when the stars align and the bank account is flush i will. problem is they never happen at the same time,if at all.

ok, i've seen those. they are the one's that are real drought resistant,or don't need much water. i guess they can store it in those big ol' horns.
