Yesterday, my boys and I went out and bagged some doves. Having asked for and received many helpful tips on how to introduce my Brittany puppy (10 months old) to the shotgun, I struck up an idea.
We came home with the doves, loaded up our Brittany and off to the field we went. This is what happened.
Got Jessi (the Brittany) out of the truck and moved her about 70 yards or so from the truck. My son got out his 20 gauge shotgun and loaded it up. I brought one of the doves with me to help Jessi focus on something other than the shotgun. I rubbed that dove all in her nose and let her get a really good whif. I threw the bird in the air and my son (with the shotgun pointed away from the dog) pulled the trigger. When Jesi heard the shot (which wasn't that loud, considering the distance and the direction he was pointing the gun) she wheeled around, her ears perked up high on her head (as if to say "what was that") and she started running for my son. She was excited about what he was doing. I got her refocused on the dove and repeated the same process. Jessi found the downed dove easy enough but curiously, she had no interest in fetching it back to me. Jessi tried to take off to my son but I had her on the leash and kept her back. I then got the idea to get her step by step, closer and closer with my son the gun.
End result, my son fired off about six or seven rounds and the last one was with Jessi about 20 yards away from the truck. She was going nuts! She wanted to badly to go and see what my son was doing.
IT WAS AWESOME. I have no introduced my bird dog to shot and she loves it.

I've still got to do that with our yellow lab duck retreiver. She's about 9 months old. I've been using a cap pistol around her in the house so that it would be quiet loud. She's already gotten use to that so hopefully when we throw a shotgun into the mix she'll do OK. We'll probably start working her around a shotgun in a couple of weeks. I have a friend that is on a business trip to China right now that has a place where we can do this. As soon as he gets back we are going to give it a try.

i introduced my pup just this week also. shes' a 11mnth old chocolate. We just went to the lake, had her sit about 10 to 15 yards away, threw the bumper fired the gun. she fetched just as usual. i
it seemed like the shot kind of "humbled" her tho. she wasn't scared or flinching, she just quit being her wild self. all in all it was a good experience and we both had a blast. we're gonna go out again a couple more times this week. getting ready for duck season.
