Question for the trainers
      #468214 - 07/24/08 02:41 PM

My pups are a yr old and have been done with OB for a while now. I waited to force fetch so they could get a little more mature. My CLF is picking the hold command up spot on, but my BLM is having some issues.

I give him the bumper and command hold.
He takes it but immediately starts chomping. Even if I hold his chin up he will chomp. He doesn't do this on play bumpers or marks.
I've seen where some folks use a string or leash around the muzzle to stop this or just hold their muzzle shut with their hand.

How would you trainers deal with this situation?

Make sure his upper jowls arent between his teeth and the bumper. It is common for them to be "mouthy" when starting this. grab his collar with left hand and pull it up high on his neck so you have some control and kneel down beside him. tell him hold and put bumper in his mouth and hold his mouth on it and start telling him hold hold and give him some good dogs in there.if he starts to mouth tell him HOLD and tap his bottom jaw up.. Only keep it there for 1-2 seconds at a time at first and gradually increase.do it atleast twice a day at short 4-5 minute sessions.
I am sure there are others on here that will offer you some better advise.

That's exactly how I am doing it right now. Just keeping it super short. Just got a PM that helped alot. Instead of holding my hand on his bottom chin I moved my fingers between the V of his jaw and this helped tremendously. Only got mouthy one time the last session a couple minutes ago.

Make him hold a pvc pipe with bailing wire wrapped around it. Cures chattery mouth almost every time.

Thanks Zack I'll give that a try.
