My dog will fetch any thing up all day long except doves.
He will pick up pheasants and ducks loving every minute of it, but this weekend, he would pick up a dove spit it out and bark.
Thoughts, idea's, I guessing I should of kept a few dove and trained with those for a while. I don't dove hunt that much anyway, but it still upset me. I few like I missed something, and let him down in his current education.
PS: he has been FF

Thats what i'm thinking, he would bring them half way back spit them out and start shaking his head trying to get all the feather out. Then bark for me to come get them. I call him back, and he didn't want to leave the bird there either, but he wouldn't pick it back up.

That's what it is. Do some FF with a dove I guess. Either that or just buy the best retrieving dog there is...as GSP!!

I thought that to but, I seen him retreive 20 plus pheasants during a 4 mile long hunt and not miss a beat, even when he tired as all get out.

But why would I want one of those tender footed, thin skinned, big running, hyper active dogs.
I'm not trained enough to do any FF work. But I guess I could just make him do some extended holds, and only used doves for a while.

Labs are too easy for us "BIRD" dog guys! One of my Autistic clients could train a lab!
I think that would work. Shoot Zach a PM...he will be able to help you out.

Then you should be able to force the dog to fetch with the collar. A dog that has been FF'd will pick up anything to avoid the pressure.
Do you use the collar on the dog? I suspect you had a pro FF your dog, and you do not use the collar on the dog. If so, I would talk to the pro that FF'd your dog, get him to show you how to force your dog to fetch when you get a refusal from your dog to fetch.

I feel for you. I was worried about this with the stories I had heard about dove, but my dog brought them up and only once had feathers stuck in her mouth.

dove have very loose feathers compared to other game birds. They especially give labs some problems because they have large mouths. Get your dog real excited and hyped up just like you would a puppy about retrieving, and throw some short fun retrieves with the dove with lots of encouragement.

Dogs not liking dove feathers is normal, but if your dog has been FF’d, you still should be able to force the dog to fetch, even if your dogs does not want to, that is the reason for FF.
The problem with my dog is that my dog gets pissed off about the feathers, it seems like she gets angry at the dove, thus she gets rough with the dove, and damages the bird.
So one thing I did open morning is I took a dove, made her hold is and said “easy” and taught her to hold it softly. This helped a lot, I think she finally got it as well that if she holds it softly, she will not get a mouth full of feathers.
I also keep water right there all the time, so she can get a drink after a retrieve, that helps get rid of all the feathers in their mouth.

LOL, I will in the morning :thumbs_up , just got back from the vet. Okie gets a night at the vet clinic, apparently my better half let him chew up one of his bumpers. He throw up most of it this evening, vet said x-ray showed three small pieces still in his stomach. Thats why I had to leave so quick tonight. It was a pleasure meeting everyone and we will have to do it again sometime.

Some dogs require extra forcing on doves due to the feathers, we use them during the force process occasionally just to let the dog have a different feel and to know that no matter what it needs to pick it up and not release till commanded.

Yeah, heard of folks using burnt fire wood for that very reason, you fetch and hold a brunt piece of fire wood, you will fetch and hold anything. I’m always reinforcing hold with my dog, ducks she holds perfectly, dove she is a bit rough but getting better, bumpers she is very soft mouth and even gets sloppy every now and then holding it like a cigar, when she does that, I knock it out of her mouth and force her to the bumper and she snaps right back in shape.
I guess if your dog was FF’d very well, and you got an excellent dog, FF never has to be revisited again. But dogs will always test you to see what they can get away with, and if they spit a bird out when they are not supposed to, and you let it go by not forcing the dog to the bird like they were trained to do in FF, then it will turn into a full blown habit and they will start doing it every time.

I believe Mr Giles dog was trained by a pro. My first call would be to him for advice on how to proceed. He can give the best insight into your dog.
