cross bow
      #327312 - 01/07/08 02:29 PM

My wife is 50% service connected, and Texas law I think says you need to be 60% to use a cross bow. My wife can't pull back a regular bow. She can't even pull back 35 lbs on a bow. How do I go about getting her a crossbow permit, or whatever it is so she can use a crossbow. Thanks in advance.

Brad

Thanks, but what do you do after you have the doctors note? Would she just carry the note with her while hunting, or does she bring that note to the GW office?

From the TPW website:

During the archery-only season for deer and turkey, however, a crossbow hunter must purchase an archery stamp and also carry a physician’s letter indicating that he or she has an upper limb impairment that would make it extremely difficult to draw a conventional bow.

Just in case you werent aware, Once rated at least 60% by the VA, you are eleigible for a yearly free super-combo hunting fishing license.

Thanks for the info, she is rated at 50%. In Louisiana she qualified at 50% for everything, but for some reason Texas has it at 60%. I just told her to talk to her doctor thank you very much.

You can also get disabled veteran license plates in Texas at 50% with $3 registration fees.

I don't know your wifes age, but 60 should be the age to use a crossbow without impiarment. You might check into that, but that's what I am trying to do for my grandad

My wife is in her 30's, so that is quite a ways off. But thanks anyway.

There are some stipulations to being able to use a crossbow:

Crossbow:

-Any person may use a crossbow to hunt game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds) during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season. Telescopic sights are lawful.

-ONLY a person with an upper-limb disability may use a crossbow to hunt deer and turkey during the Archery Only Open Season, provided the person, while hunting, has in their immediate possession a physician's statement certifying the extent of the disability.

-An upper-limb disability is a permanent loss of the use of fingers, hand, or arm in a manner that renders the person incapable of using lawful archery equipment.

-A crossbow is lawful for game animals and game birds (except migratory game birds and as provided above), provided:

-the crossbow has a minimum pull of 125 pounds;
-the crossbow has a mechanical safety; and
-the crossbow stock is not less than 25 inches in length.
