I am in need of a little guidance. My son is wanting to get started in bow hunting which I know nothing abou really. He found a beginners bow at Academy that is a decent price- $99. It only has a 30 lb draw weight though. Is this to light of a draw to be used effectively hunting. I am just not very knowledgeable about this and don't want him to waste his money. Any help is appreciated.

Diamond makes a bow that will grow with your child. It's called the Edge. When they outgrow the limbs, you can get the next sized limbs for them at a very cheap price and have them put on. I believe that Parker and Bear do the same thing as well.

I believe the current legal draw weight for texas is 40lbs.. pse also has a bow that grows with you.. it was my first bow... its called a nova

TPWD eliminated the 40 lb minimum draw weight (see http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/releases/?req=20080331a). In my opinion (others disagree), 30 pounds is a bit light for deer/hogs but probably OK for small game. There are lots of youth bows out there that kids have outgrown at bargain prices.

If you guys are brand new, I'd advise you to go to a local bow shop and talk to those guys. Academy's great, if you know what you want going in the door. The staff at my local store just hasn't seemed to be very knowledgeable about some things. I'm sure it'd different at every store.
There's a guy on here who works for Academy. Help guys...is it JDickey? If Academy's your preferred store, he could be tons of help to you.

I just attended the Bowhunter Education class and according to the instructors there will not be a draw weight restriction when the new regulation comes out.
I don't agree with it, but that is what I was told. I have not read it personally. Seems like there would be a lot of wounded animals walking around with arrows sticking out of them if you go less than 40#.

Go with the Diamond " The Edge" It will be the best bet for your kiddo. Stay away from the Parker, they are not that good of a bow. My son shoots one now, and will be shooting a Diamond REAL soon.

My first bow was a PSE Nova SU. It is highly adjustable and should work for your kid. It has a fair price tag as well.
