I modified a DPMS 10 round magazine to accommodate the longer COAL handloads.

I devised a plan to support the face of the magazine and only malform an area for the nose of the bullet to travel down the front of the magazine.

Using a piece of wood I cut and grooved it and then applied hammer and sharp edge force along the inside wall of the magazine so that the pressure would bend the mag wall outward.

Worked like a charm, a little shaping of the mag follower and I'm in business.

Weighs in at 5.5 lbs, same as the Remington R15 22" upper.

Chamber (tightness around casing) and distance to barrel lands differs slightly from the Remington. 16" bull barrel on a carbine gas length system. I look forward to getting to the range soon with this one, certainly a short/fatty.

Mine shoots 1/2" groups without all that.

Yes any modifications that I have shown above are unnecessary, the base stock 30 RAR, whether it be R15 or DPMS, is an accurate round with lots of factory ammo available online.

I'm about 30 days away from getting the custom gun put together, I'll update then on the aspects of all three versions of this 30 cal AR option.

Update on the DPMS:

Ran about 50 rounds through it yesterday, cleaning the bore after every third shot up to 30 and then I will let it rip.

Functioned flawlessly, more punchy recoil than the longer, sleeker, Remington R15 version but nothing compared to 308.

Here is a photo of the upper mated to my lower and topped with a thermal weapon sight I rented from Bearclaw in the trading/post section of this forum.

Video shows a shot taken at 200 yards with 5x magnification - I'd say the cartridge is PLENTY ACCURATE!

I had a chronograph on hand this week and I verified that the 16 inch DPMS upper slings 125gr Hornady SST bullets at 2690 FPS. This is with a near max load of 31.0 grains of Accurate 5744 at COAL 2.260. A member from another forum ran a calculation for me out to 500 yards.



I also verified that the 168gr Berger Classic Hunters which are loaded longer and require the previously documented magazine butchering - those have a MV of 2395 FPS out of the 16 inch upper.

A very versatile caliber indeed!

I think its already washed up. I wish that it would have taken off, but remington does not seem to support it and ammo is too expensive for me and I currently don't reload.

Well the AR10 prices are way down but the weight isn't.

The GII design is higher in price - I think that is what Rem / DPMS are trying to draw customers towards.

The 30 Remington AR continues to live in a cave, it sure would be nice to get a small gun shop to adopt it as a fun-loving AR15 cartridge.

Currently the experiment continues to build one not using DPMS/Rem propreitary parts however the magazines continue to be a limiting factor. I can't find any magazines that accomodate the round in higher capacities that feed reliably. Somebody in the polymer mag business could design one if the customer base swells.

Here is groups from yesterdays range session with my custom build:

McGowen 20" stainless barrel. 1x9 twist with a .1098 gas port
AR Performance barrel extension and 800 series custom 30 RAR bolt.
All other parts are standard AR15 components.







At this point I am still working out the kinks in cycling, I may have to try a lighter weight bolt carrier or a different gas block. Also the above loads are longer than standard AR15 COAL and I use my modified factory magazines covered on page 1 of the thread.

Next month I will load develop a standard length load probably with the 125gr Hornady SST.

I think it's cool, and nice. But I think 6.8 has the 110-120gr weight class covered with equal or better
velocity and better ballistics out of a light (govt profile) 18" barrel. Lot's of ammo, lots of magazines
and lots of brass. I'd love to have a 30AR and a 6.5 Grendel, if I had money to burn and another safe or two.
But for now, I just have a 6.8 and it has plenty of overlap with both. Check out the 270AR, it's pretty bad too.

30 RAR matches either 6.5G or 6.8 in velocity out to 400 yards the only advantage is it puts a .30 cal hole in things whereas the others can't.

Past 400 yards the others ballistic coefficients and bullet weights allow for them to carry more terminal velocity with less drop.

Me personally I haven't killed many things past 400 yards and I blind or stand hunt primarily so I'm going to give it a whirl.

None of the above is meant to be derogatory to 6.5G or 6.8 SPC - I myself have owned a handful of Grendels. I believe the facts are there to support it.

Now 270AR is a BEAST but for me to hard to work the brass for a large cache of ammo.

Aren't non-556 and 308 caliber caliber semis FUN!
