Making some hog loads for my 45 LC Winchester 94 trapper rifle. Just tried 20.5 grains of Winchester 296 behind 300 grain gas check bullets. Shot fair, kicked hard.

Anybody else shooting one of these or anything else in 45 LC? If so what loads have worked for you?

Thanks,

Roger

I use the same bullets for my 45acp and LC's, 230 fmj Rainier from Midway USA. Powder is Titegroup. I make them for my Ruger single action pistol though. Work great and not much kick, probably due to the lighter bullet.

I did some bullet testing in my 94 45 Colt Trapper about 3 years ago, I posted a link to it below. Although I didn't post up my loads I have them written down and if you want them I'll post them up, but I just basically took the max H110 load and backed off about half a grain and let them fly.

RickyK, please post them up. I am thinking of trying some H110.

The loads I made produced a velocity of 1432 fps. The penetrating power of these should be awesome. What I want to do is shoot some hogs with them at oblique angles or maybe some end to end shots and see how much they penetrate. Also would like to go for a 2 in 1 shot if I can get a couple to line up correctly.

Roger

You are using H110 for 45LC? I thought that was just for magnum loads. I use that for my 44 mag and 357 loads. Good stuff.

Check the Hodgdon website and it allows you to access load data based on bullet weight and powder.

RickyK, thanks for posting these loads. It gives me something to compare my loads to. I was getting my load data from a Thompson Center reloading manual for the contender handguns. The manual states these loads should be OK for 94 trapper rifles but I was a little worried about over pressuring the rifle. But my loads and the corresponding velocities are a little less than yours so this give some peace of mind that the loads are safe.

If you go to the Hodgdon on-line Reloading Data Center and compare recommended loads for the two powder, you will find exactly the same data for both powders.

These aren't the only 2 powders that are identical.

Winchester 296 = Hodgdon H110

Winchester 231 = Hodgdon HP-38

Winchester 571 = Hodgdon HS-7

Winchester 540 = Hodgdon HS-6

Standard factory loads will penetrate darn near end to end on a 135# pic. I did it out of a 94 with a handload 1/2 grain more than factory.
