Well my father-in-law surprised me today. He offered me his old 6mm remington. It needs alot of work. I think his son was hacked that he offered it to me but then again he never showed any interest what so over. Only became "interested" when the subject came up.

I thanked him but told him to give it to his son. But I said if he does not get it repaired in 3 months to give it to me. We'll see what happens. My money is on me getting the 6mm.

Below are some pics of the rifle before going to the gunsmith.

honestly, JJH, I am not sure. I am told that it was built for him by his father according to grandmother-in-law. Anyway it "6mm remington" stamped on the side and a mauser action (if i am not mistaken). When you bolt open the chamber the fire pin comes straight back and is ready to fire when bolt closed. It also has Leupold Scope. Either a MX-3 or Mark 3...I cannot remember. when looking through the scope it has german#4 like sights. As far dating it I would say 60's maybe even 50's. I will have to ask.

those old mausers like that are probably some of the most under-rated guns out there.

a lot of them look rough and beat up but in my experience they are some of the best shooters you can get your paws on.

i have one i inherited when my grandpa passed a few years ago (chambered in 30-06) and i've taken 2 deer with it and a couple of pigs. these guns are tough, rugged, and will hold up for years.

i recently bought another one chambered in 257 roberts (simular to the 6mm), and it is a sweet shooter. i had the stock refinished and it is truly a beautiful rifle now. it did look rough when i got it, but after some TLC i can tell you this will be a gun i will keep around.

the other good thing is that these guns are usually heavy, and it calibers like the 257 and the 6mm recoil is light.

i hope you get the gun, spend some money getting the stock refinished and you will be happy.

if it's stamped 6mm rem. it has to be from 1963 or newer.before that they called it a 244 rem.

My dad has one and it is a sweet gun, easy and fun to shoot.

very true...but it could be and older Mauser action that had a 6mm Rem barrel installed in the '60's. Would be interesting to see a pic! One thing for sure, it's a family treasure and should be treated as such, IMHO!

The barrell needs to be cleaned real bad both in and out. The action has some numbers engraved into it but i could not read them. I will ask to take some pictures of it. Kinda of tense situation between brother-in-law and mother-in-law but the old man is tired of messing with them and wants to see it put to use.

Well, i don't get the gun, per say. I have it until the brother-in-law wants it. But I get it this weekend...straight to the gun smith for a good cleaning. Yeah you could do it yourself but rather let the people who have more experience than me do it.

Can't wait to shoot back home in San Angelo in June. Taken the boy camping.

oh.... I will post pic's in the next couple of days.

Marc

Thats a nice rifle, a little stock work and it will make a good deer gun.

Looks like a 98 action, I could be wrong. Either way, congrats. The two I have don't even have the caliber stamped on the barrel!

An open question here. I've been trying to get input on some 244 ammo I can get in a trade. Reckon that would work fine in this 6mm Remmy?
