What's your best method for getting out after you are stuck?
I guess my best tip is, once you realize that OK, I'm stuck is to just STOP! Don't keep spinning your tires and making it worse. I have used deer corn several times to get out. Sometimes all you need is just a little help.
I have also jack up the truck and put limbs and rocks in the rut. Off course a good strong come a long works great too if you have something to tie to.

I have used a high-lift jack - they're good, but dangerous. Also I have looped a chain around a tree, then back to the truck and took a limb and twisted enough to move it one way or the other. Yeah - comealongs are good. I have a 10K LB winch now.

On the tractor, I have heard of people chaining 4x4's to the rear wheels. There is a video on your tube somewhere about this. Tractor comes right out.

When I was a kid and we got the tractor too close to the playa lake and buried it we boomed some corner cedar posts to the rear tires and it worked.
I have a 12k winch now but you need an anchor.
Without a winch here is a general technique not covering some of the goofy situations I've found myself in:
First thing I do is the "rock n roll" forwards and reverse.
Second thing, is get the shovel and dig down, and find boards/rocks/branches/anything that will help get traction.
Third, call friend to bring a long rope.

HOF, how well does the anchor thing work? I have thought about using a boat anchor as, well as an anchor. Is that what you are talking about or are you talking about an anchor point?

this saved the day once for me.
if one rear tire is spinning wrap something (like a rope) around the emergency brake cable going to that wheel and pull REAL HARD applying the brake which transfers power to the other wheel have someone else drive out. Worked great! If you're alone and don't have someone else to drive out, your only chance is if you have some vice grips to keep the brake applied.
other that that, sticks, rocks , whatever you can find, or walk back and get another vehicle.

haven't gotten stuck on a tractor with front end loader yet...normally can get it worked out with the bucket before it gets too bad. I have learned that a good sledge hammer and a 4x4 will sometimes work...other times I've seen skidder hooked to skidder..hooked to dozer and it not worked out..(now those are some ruts to get lost in)

I have been able to use my front end loader to get my 2wd tractor out every time. Just bucket all the way down put it in reverse, and use the bucket to push you backwards.

I have done the front end loader thing too in order to get out of a sticky situation. However, this time I backed up into the soft spot to mow one little patch. The problem was it got worse the further back I went. I tried to use the bucket to inch my way forward and all I did was gum up the front. So, now the mower is up all the way and it's buried in the mud.
About all I could do was to put 4x4's under the bucket to lift the front tires up and then put 2x6's under the front wheels and inch out.
We finally got back for enough so that we could use a come-a-long to pull back and the fourwheeler to pull the front sideways. Once the front wheels got out of the goo we could finally make forward progress.
It will never happen again.

You can make an anchor out of a stout limb if you had to. The best thing to do is carry a round bar or a piece of pipe with you - about 18 to 24 inches long. Hook the chain or cable around the center of the bar/pipe and bury it about 10 to 25 inches deep (horizontally), depending on how deep the mud is and the condition of the soil.
You can buy an anchor made for this at some off-road stores.

I don't think it's necessary to brake just one wheel. You can achieve the same thing by just applying some brake action to both wheels. Slip-type differentials are designed such that if you simply stop one wheel from spinning free, torque is applied to the both wheels. You need only apply a little more engine power to work against the braking action on the wheel with traction.

i think they make something called a toe buddy that is made to hook up to your winch. i think it looks like a plow but facing the other direction. it will dig is slef in and pull you out
Not sure if I'd call you a machine, but you are definitely a tool.

My buddies that run jet boats in the pacific northwest use the anchors. Pound it into the dirt, tie on the winch, and pull yourself free. The anchors cost around $75, but it's a heck of lot cheaper than hiring a cargo helicopter to come in and pull your butt out.
I've been is some sandy places in West Texas there was nothing to tie off to. I dug a trench about 3 feet deep, buried a fence post, and tied off and used a come a long. However, in my older more mature years, I've done a better job of not going where you get stuck like that.;)

BTW, good thread. Reminds me I'd better throw an anchor in.
Also, I've used a high lift jack as an anchor before. Hey, you use what ya got.

I always carried a shovel a come-a-long and some long chockers/nylon straps in my Bronco and blazer.Got stuck down on the river once when it rained after I went down on the sand bar to fish.Without the shovel I would have been there until it dried up.No trees to tie to.
Keep your powder dry,the wind in your face and watch your backtrail.

yall are talking about an anchor to tie winch off too.... this is what we use and its worked great for years... get some old axles out of a rearend and drive them things in the ground almost to were there flat then wrap cable or chanin around then drive them on down... pull self to axle or till out... once out pull truck winch right over axle and use winch to winch strait up and pull it out... works great.....

All really good tips! The best one that I finally learned is, when in doubt-get out..and go do some recon of what you're about to drive into. Secondly, if you do most of your driving in 2wd, you can probably get out by switching to 4wd after you get stuck. If you you're barely making it in 4wd and THEN get stuck...you're in trouble! Otherwise I've used a variety of redneck engineering techniques to get unstuck. The best thing to do if it's available, is just stop and get help. Everybody needs a good laugh, and you just might make somebody else's day!

Someone in my Jeep club got stuck a few years back when we went to Lake Texoma when it was very low. The top crust was dry but it was more like old chocolate pudding in a bowl. Just under the dry stuff was mud that looked just like chocolate pudding. We had to dig the tires out, jack the Jeep up with hi-lift jacks (be very careful...they can kill you) and pulled with 5 jeeps equipped with tow straps and winches. We finally got the guy out, but it was a LOT of work.
I've seen lot of folks have trouble with hi-lift jacks...concussions, split scalps, black eyes...they can hurt you. You also have to be careful of the vehicle tilting off the jack...NEVER work under a vehicle when using a hi-lift jack.
