Just tried it in the house with my son's Crayola marker. As expected, it puts out red light now instead of white. No reason this should be any less effective than an acutal read lens, correct?

How many beers did that take?

I have no idea on the effectiveness, maybe so, just never would have thought about that...

Aren't crayons made of wax? It seems if you leave it on for a few minutes that the wax would get hot, melt, and then run off the lens exposing the white light. Someone else told me that the cheap plastic notebook separators that come in red are better. They are 8.5" X 11" and can be wrapped around the head of the light, and then rubber banded on, or wrap some tape to hold them. Cheap too.

It was marker, not crayons. You can wipe it right off, too, which is probably its weakness. You can color on green, yellow, red, etc.

And sig, no beers. Think I had some soy milk just before, though...wife got me on that stuff years ago...won't touch regular milk anymore.

I tried the red marker route on an LED "shoplight" looking thing. It didn't work very well for me (all I got was white light with a little red tint to it). My next great idea (cough cough) is to use that red celophane stuff florists use to make their flower arrangments. For what it is worth, the last spotlight I bought had a red lens.

dividers work good...just eletric tape them on about an inch back from the lens, works perfect!

Well, I looked for a red lens for my Maglite, but couldn't find one. Ended up buying a red treat bag for parties and such and taped that to the flashlight. Same idea as a notebook divider. Works great...will use it this week!

I used an old spotlight with permanent red magic marker on the lens for years as a kid. I worked great.

Try the red tape meant to cover your tail lights if they get broken. You can find it in the automotive section. We used to use it tne ARMY when they mandated all flashlights had to be red lens.
