Yep, it is illegal but I have known many people who will and do. In fact, I would if I thought that I could get away with it but with my luck, I would get caught!!!

It is against the law to:

possess a deer or any part of a deer that has been hit by a motor vehicle.

That is directly from the TP&W website and can be found on page 61 of the Outdoor Annual.

If more folks would try that they might get the horns. I have even heard of GW's giving folks fresh hit deer if it was called in.

I wouldn't count on either happening, but you never know if you don't try.

One of my friends hit a deer and called the game warden, the warden asked if he wanted the deer to eat since it was fresh killed and he said sure. The GW proceded to field dress the deer and put it in the truck for him and said have a nice night.

you can not take the horns off the deer. I have heard that if you hit the deer you can call the GW and tell him and he will tell you if you can take it or not but if you take if you have to tag it.

If the GW gives you the deer he will fill out a road kill tag to put on it, you do not have to use your tag..

I talked to the Regional Commander from Parks & Wildlife FTW office and he said they will tag it for you if you call it in.
