Low Budget Self Guided Exotic Meat Hunt-feral sheep or goats - 02/24/15 11:13 PM

Hey Guys, This is my first post. I joined to hopefully learn more about Texas hunting, exotics and feral animals in particular. I'm a meat hunter, not just the normal if its brown its down kind of meat hunter though. I'm very into cooking wild game and doing it in a ways that are out of the box for the normal hunting crowd. I like to take things that normally are looked down on or ignored in the hunting world and really elevate them. You can look at my Instagram account if you want to see what kind of stuff I do. I'm @maneatswild. I've been hunting and fishing all my life and have passed it on to my kids at very early ages. Anyway I've decided to start expanding my hunting horizons and doing some hunting and fishing trips out of the normal Midwest stuff I've done forever. I'm looking for different things to inspire some new cooking. I have fished a lot in Florida and Hawaii, but that was mostly pre-kids!!! So Ive booked on hog hunt in Oklahoma coming up in May. That got me thinking about what would be next. I'm on shoestring budget with kids and my wife is a full time student right now. So here's my question:
I've done alot of looking into exotics hunts in Texas and it seems most are really pricey and you stay in big lodge with full accomodations or you hunt in a small pen of 80acres. What I really would like to find is some place where we could go camp out or stay in basic bunkhouse type amenities and hunt some feral sheep, or goats, or something else we don't have up here in Missouri. Does any such place exist? If not what would be the cheapest type hunt to get started? I don't really want high fence and I don't care about trophies really, although a set of horns or antlers to remember the trip by are cool.

Going through the web and digging past the grape vine so to speak is a great way to find stuff.
You can find some great deals via that way smile
If I'm not mistaken, I think MulieMike might be offering low-fence Corsican hunts at a place on the Devils River. I'm not 100% sure though.

Go to the outfitters section on here and just start weeding through the posts, when you find some your interested in make a separate post to ask others if they have hunted with the outfitters before and you will get opinions.

If you are a bow hunter search for Amistad National Recreation Area. Not that I am recommending this hunt cuz I have never tried it. Also you may want to search for TPWD Draw hunts, over time you might get drawn, but it is not unusual to apply for years and get nothing. welcome To the forum.

Might check with Thompson Temple, he is cheaper, but he is HF.

JDogg, I'm from much the same line of thinking as you and in a similar boat, kids, wife and a budget.

Keep searching, there are opportunities out there but they aren't easy to find. Just cruise the forum from time to time and sometimes you get lucky. The big trick is getting a landowner to trust you alone out on his property. I too love the idea of an unguided hunt. I'd gladly shoot a much smaller trophy but with the knowledge I did it all myself.
